Knowing how to network successfully can help you tap into a hidden job market and present your skills and experience to potential employers. More than half of jobs are filled through networking contacts and more employers are turning to social media tools for help with hiring.

Using network referrals to get a job can lead to 6% higher annual income and most networkers stay in their jobs for two times longer than direct job searchers.

Benefits of Networking

Whatever your reason for diving into the world of networking, the benefits can be huge. 96% of employees at Adobe feel that networking strengthens their creativity. The benefits of a strong network extend beyond work, as having a strong social network may lead to fewer symptoms of dementia and other diseases.

More than half of people get word-of-mouth referrals from networking contacts. It has always been a tool for job seekers but today, it’s a skill that can help many other professionals advance their careers.

Scientists use networking to help secure research grants. Contractors and construction workers network to find new contracts.

Business leaders network with their employees to build relationships, foster creativity, and get to know each other outside the office. Artists and musicians use networking strategies to build followers and get discovered.

Building Your Network

Professionals can develop casual contact networks by participating community service organizations or the Chambers of Commerce. These networks are a great place to discuss local business and legislation and meet people from other professions. Casual contact networks can improve your business’ reputation in the local community and increase the likelihood that contacts will patronize your business.

Strong contact networks are more focused on sharing referrals within a small group of professionals. This is where developing a strong, long-term relationship is key to successful networking. Contacts made through the Business Network International (BNI) have resulted in 9.8 million referrals worldwide.

Networking can also be a tool to learn and share ideas with other professionals within your industry. Professionals can attend events and meetups to get to know other professionals and make connections. Professional conferences are a great opportunity to network while learning new skills and solutions for your business.

Now that you know why networking is so important, here are some tips that can help you learn how to network successfully:

  1. Personalize Your Profile

Whatever social media platform you’re using, personalizing your profile is key to standing out from the crowd. On LinkedIn, including at least 5 skills on your profile can create 17 times more views. Take the time to fill out everything in your profile and write summaries that show some personality and style.

2. Keep Updating

Once your profile is filled out, you have to keep it up to date. Regularly updated profiles get more views and more searches. Keep updating your profile, writing posts, and changing your profile picture.

3. Stay Professional

When networking on social media, always be polite and courteous. You might even want to create separate accounts to keep your personal life away from your professional life. However, don’t focus only on business. It’s important to build relationships by asking others about their lives and not just work.

4. Use Photos

Social media is driven by pictures and professional networking sites are no different. Profiles with photos get 21 times more views.

Other users form an impression of you in only 1/10th of a second. So, pick your photos carefully.

5. Move Offline

Networking is about building relationships and it’s always best to do that face-to-face. When you make a contact online, follow up in person or at least with a phone call. Always make the effort to keep in touch with contacts. Few strong relationships are better than a lot of mere acquaintances.

Tips & Tricks for Networking In Person

  • Have your business cards ready to go.
  • Listen to others and see what help you can offer them.
  • Share promotions from other companies and ask them to share yours.
  • Meet outside the office for a better opportunity to get to know co-workers and other professionals.

I want us to talk about 5 reasons you should communicate your brand stories.

First of all, I’ll like to clarify what brand storytelling is.

Brand Storytelling is a way of thinking and communicating a brand that puts a narrative at their very heart and thereby makes them both meaningful and compelling – for the audience and the brand.

Now that we understand what brand storytelling is, we need to understand how brand storytelling can help us achieve our communication goals

Usually, we have 5 major reasons for communicating our brand stories:

– Brand awareness and visibility

– Top of mind in our industry

– Communicate brand positioning

– Promote products and services

– Drive sales and conversions

There are a couple of strategies and tactics that can work for your brand, you need to find them and apply them to make your brand storytelling effective.

You need to understand that people are generally ‘’selfish’’.

They care ONLY about their problems and they are very preoccupied with finding solutions to those problems, hence, you need to do your market research and use social listening well, so you can immerse yourself in the lives of your ideal audience and know their pain points and challenges.

Once you do that, you need to think of solutions that provide UTILITY, CONVENIENCE, and MEANING.

Utility- solve a problem

Convenience – Save me time, money, stress

Meaning – provide me with a relevant solution that changes my life and helps me to be a better person.

Once your stories and solution do these 3 things, then you know that you are going to be successful at communicating your messages with influential storytelling.

I want to quickly share something that limits us a lot as entrepreneurs and even as individuals.

I call it the ”Story Wars”.

Story Wars is not my invention, I just borrowed it. lol

I call it Story Wars because there’s a struggle between your present reality…which seems very real to you and your future reality…which seems like a distant aspiration or dream that you may someday realize.

One way to win this war, is by asking yourself, ”what narrative am I going to believe?”

You can choose to believe the narrative that you are too limited in your present capacity, so you can’t achieve your goals.

Or you can choose to believe that you are more than enough and that by disciplining yourself to put in the work, over time you will achieve your desired result.

Before you choose the second worldview, you need something called ”Mental Assent”

You need to believe in your mind, heart and confess with your mouth your belief and faith in yourself to achieve your desired result.

Failure to do so means you will quit when challenges come or people come and start asking you questions.

You will quit because you haven’t made up your mind to give it all it takes or die trying.

Going all in is how champions win championships.

You need to be a practising extremist with a disciplined work ethic to achieve desired goals.

That’s how you win the story wars as an influential storyteller.

I had an amazing experience recently I’ll like to share with you.

I was feeling a bit restless and overwhelmed with all I had to do in my job and business and I felt like there was a lot of clutter around me.

Then I did something a bit strange.

I started clearing my physical environment, my room to be more specific.

I cleaned up the whole place, rearranged the beds and wardrobe and even made preparations for a painter to come paint and set up a mini office/studio in all the new space I had just created.

It was an exciting experience for me!

From where my bed was now positioned, I could see my vision board more clearly and I was more inspired to achieve my goals.

You need to be very intentional about the experiences you create for yourself because what you see, feel and experience affects your worldviews, belief systems, the stories you tell and your ability to take massive action.

If you want to be able to make accelerated progress in your life, change your life experiences.

Another way you can change your life experiences is by traveling and going out for events in inspirational places. These experiences influence your worldviews, quality of life and the life stories you live and share.

This encourages you to be more confident in yourself and your ability to produce results.

I want us to talk about 5 brand stories you should be sharing with your audience. There are 5 types of stories your brand should be sharing:

Your personal story

If you want to start a conversation with a stranger, you do one of two things:

Introduce yourself briefly and ask about the other person

Find common interests and instantly bond based on shared interests.

None of the strategies is wrong, you can employ both.

The important thing is you make sure to share parts of your personal story that resonates with your audience.

Your self-awareness story

This is keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey

You didn’t just wake up and decide to start the niche business that you are currently working on.

Even if you’re still finding clarity about what you want to do, you can share the different insights you’ve gotten from your self-introspection.

Your growth story

As you get more aware of yourself and you grow, you need to find out what periods in your life you experienced tangible growth (in your mind, capacity or results).

Journal all these experiences and use them as often as you can in your brand stories, as long as your audience can relate to them.

Your result-oriented story.

This is the part a lot of us jump right on to.

It’s not a very effective strategy.

The saying holds through, ‘’I don’t care how much you know until I know how much you care’’.

Hence, you communicate your results-based story with EMPATHY.

Communicate with a shared sense of understanding of the problem and struggles of your audience and how your growth journey and key milestones achieved qualifies you as a guide to help them on their own journey.

Make it all about them.

Never about you.

You’re the guide remember?

Empower your hero to stay in the spotlight. Be the guide.

Your movement story

This is when your storytelling gets interesting.

You have gotten the attention and trust of your hero and you’ve shared your journey: struggles, failures, milestones, successes and how that qualifies you as a guide.

Now, you have to CLEARLY communicate the journey you are taking the hero on and how you will take him on that journey.

Introduce your movement and trigger curiosity, interest, and excitement.

Find other heroes and introduce them too to your movement.

Lead your tribe.

During a Q&A interactive session with Women Of Rubies, Online marketing professional and LinkedIn Influencer, Kayode Abass talked about why it is important to be on LinkedIn and also shared some nuggets on how to get started.
He shared:
*The most important part of your LinkedIn profile is your profile
photo and your headline. It’s the first thing people use to judge if
you are worth connecting with. It creates the first impression and
first impressions last.
*Your LinkedIn profile helps you build trust. It shows you do indeed exist.

*To make your profile relevant, you need to fill all your information
on your profile, you need to get your colleagues and customers to
recommend and endorse you and you need to publish contents on
LinkedIn. If you do those, people will start seeing you on their
time-limes.

*Build relationships and network on LinkedIn. Don’t wait till you’ve
been laid off from work or till you have a product and service you
want to sell. Build relationships and network before those things
happen. LinkedIn groups are a great way to build relationships and
network with people who share the same interests as you.

*Your LinkedIn profile is what clients and prospective employers see
when they google search your name (Go to Google.com, search for your
name and see). Recruiters and companies now fully rely on LinkedIn
instead of the old fashioned way to recruit candidates.

*It is possible to schedule posts for personal page and business page
using Buffer and Hootsuite. I use the two for my clients and they run
smoothly.

*LinkedIn allows you to add your other social media account links to
your profile. If you need a job, you will need to find and connect
with the right people on LinkedIn. You will need to connect with and
build relationships with HRs especially.
