Oluwaseyi Moejoh, affectionately called Seyi, has come a long way from her days of picking up plastic bottles as a teenager. Almost 7 years ago, if someone had told her that she would one day make history as the first young African woman named a Young Superhero for Earth, it would have seemed far-fetched. But that was just the beginning of her remarkable journey.

A Call to Action

Oluwaseyi’s interest in tackling plastic pollution sparked when she was a 16-year-old high school student. She was disheartened by the rising pollution levels in her country and concerned about the lack of meaningful involvement of the next generation in finding solutions to the plastic pollution crisis.

Since then, with relentless passion, Seyi has spearheaded over 50 youth-led projects in the past six years to address plastic pollution and catalyze climate action in Nigeria and Africa. Through her nonprofit, U-recycle Initiative Africa, she has led initiatives such as deploying “talking” recycling bins in leading universities, developing a tech-enabled gamified learning platform about plastic pollution, and conducting climate education workshops in low-income schools across Nigeria.

A Testament to Youth Power

Seyi’s favorite quote, “Young people can change the world, give us a chance,” echoes her journey. At just 22, her story stands as a testament to the transformative power of youth when given an opportunity to shape a sustainable future. It’s also a clarion call to older generations to support young people in realizing their dreams of a greener, healthier planet.

Despite facing challenges due to her age, gender, and background, Seyi refused to be held back. She believes in the importance of intergenerational collaboration, understanding, and listening to the needs of the earth, the vulnerable, and the next generation.

Recognition and Acknowledgment

Last month, in Atlanta, United States, Oluwaseyi was honored with the 2024 Young SuperHero for Earth Award by the Captain Planet Foundation (CPF), the oldest and largest youth-focused environmental organization globally. This recognition places her among environmental visionaries like President Jimmy Carter, Dr. Jane Goodall, and Xiye Bastida. Additionally, she was named one of Leading Ladies Africa’s 100 Most Inspiring Women in Nigeria for 2024.

The CPF, an offshoot of the Captain Planet and the Planeteers animated series, aims to foster youth’s connection with nature and empower them to create change. Through various programs like Project Learning Garden and the Planeteer Alliance, CPF has impacted over 1.7 million K-12 youth globally, nurturing a generation of eco-conscious leaders.

Oluwaseyi Moejoh’s journey serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of youth to drive positive change and create a more sustainable future for all.

A team of biologists have released photos of a rare melanistic leopard, also called the Black Panther, which was shot in the  bushlands of Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia County in Kenya.

Nick Pilfold and his team, after hearing that there’s a black wildcat lurking in the are, deployed remote cameras to capture the big cat.

According to National Geographic, the juvenile female was spotted traveling with a larger, normally coloured leopard, presumed to be her mother.

There is a mild controversy as to whether it’s the first time the cat is being seen since a 1909 photograph taken in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper said a similar photograph was taken in 2013 byPhoebe Okall, but Pilfold and his team say otherwise.

These new photos were captured by wildlife photographer Will Burrard Lucas.

Pilford told CNN that he’s “aware of a few different photos taken over the years, but most of them are taken from a distance and could not be used as confirmatory evidence.”

According to Pilford, Okall’s photo “is a captive black leopard that was brought from America as a kitten to Kenya, not wild.”

The photos were published in January in the African Journal of Ecology.

Speaking on why the leopard is black, Lucas told BBC:

The term that makes them black is called melanism and it’s the same thing that makes a house cat black, or any other cat species.

It’s kind of like albino but the other way.

A black panther is basically a melanistic big cat. Typically in Africa and Asia that would mean a melanistic leopard – a black leopard.

In South America it would be a melanistic jaguar – a black jaguar.

Black panther is a looser term.

Melanesians are black island people in the south pacific that migrated over thousands of years ago, long before the blacks that came to the Americas as slaves.

Melanesia is a sub-region of Oceania extending from the western end of the Pacific Ocean to the Arafura Sea, and eastward to Fiji. The region comprises most of the islands immediately north and northeast of Australia, including the countries of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Island, and New Caledonia. The name Melanesia was first used by Jules Dumont d’Urville in 1832 to denote an ethnic and geographical grouping of islands distinct from Polynesia and Micronesia.

Until recently, the indigenous melanesian people practised cannibalism, head-hunting, kidnapping and slavery, just like the Asmat tribe, but with contact with Europeans, the population is now predominantly Christian. However, more than 90% lead rural lives.

The Melanesian people of the Solomon Islands are the point of interest when it comes to dark skin and blond hair. The Solomon Islands are located in the South Pacific, the very heart of Melanesia, just Northeast of Australia, between Papua and Vanuatu and is an independent state within the British Commonwealth.

Although the indigenous Melanesian population of the islands possess the darkest skin outside of Africa, between 5 and 10% have bright blond hair.

There have been several theories on how they got their blond hair — from sun and salt whitening, high fish intake, or genetic heritage from mixed-breeding with Americans/Europeans who founded the islands.

A geneticist from Nova Scotia agricultural college in Canada, Sean Myles, conduced a genetic analysis on saliva and hair samples from 1209 Melanesian Solomon Island residents. From comparing 43 blond Islanders and 42 brown Islanders, he found that the blondes carried two copies of a mutant gene which is present in 26% of the island’s population. The Melanesian people have a native TYRP1 gene which is partly responsible for the blond hair and melanin, and is totally distinct to that of Caucasians as it doesn’t exist in their genes.

It is a recessive gene and is more common in children than in adults, with hair tending to darken as the individual matures.

This contributes to the theories that black Africans were the first homo sapiens and that all races came out of the black African race.

The Kenyan government has announced its plan to develop mobile phones manufactured in the country.

(Photo: NPR)

The government, according to Kenya’s minister of information, communication and technology, Joe Mucheru, is putting aside one billion shillings ($10 million) to help local startups working in the mobile telephone software and hardware industry.

The move, he said, was aimed at bolstering manufacturing and making phones that are “suitable for our markets”, with the added benefit of driving the prices of phones down. The minister expressed concern at the fact that the country imports 50 million mobile phones every two years.

As it stands, technology is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Kenyan economy: almost 98% of the population has access to a mobile phone and mobile services like M-Pesa, operated by Safaricom, achieving almost nationwide penetration.

(Photo: Biznews)

According to analysis by QZ, it may prove difficult for the Kenyan government to win with their line of smartphones:

“Despite this, developing phones locally and making them attractive to consumers will be a difficult task. Chinese handset maker Transsion Holdings will also prove a serious challenge for any Kenyan brand: using its research centers in Kenya and Nigeria and factories in Ethiopia, the Shenzhen-based company produces phones in and for the continent, some as cheap as $10.

And as the company gears up to provide more features in affordable prices in the coming years, it is expected to drive both smartphone and feature phone uptake—proving that Kenya’s dream project will be easier said than done.”
