A top Executive at the World Bank, Kristalina Georgieva of Bulgaria, now faces no opposition in her candidacy to lead the International Monetary Fund, the fund announced Monday.

Kristalina has a clear path to lead the International Monetary Fund

Georgieva, currently the bank’s Chief Executive Officer, is all but guaranteed to become the second woman ever to lead the fund.

Georgieva will replace former IMF chief Christine Lagarde, who has been named to lead the European Central Bank.

“The board’s goal is to complete the selection process as soon as possible and at the latest by October 4, 2019,” the IMF board said in a statement.

Under an unwritten rule, a European has always led the IMF since its creation in the aftermath of World War II while Washington has designated the leadership of the fund’s sister organization, the World Bank.

The nominating period closed on Friday, a day after the fund formally lifted the age limit of 65 years for its leadership, clearing the way for the 66-year-old to take up the position.

No other candidates came forward.

The IMF executive board will now hold meetings with Georgieva, the statement said.

She said last month she was “honored” to be nominated to lead the IMF and was taking leave from her work at the World Bank.

The IMF, a global crisis lender, has been buffeted over the last year by the rise of populism in advanced economies and escalating trade conflicts running counter to the fund’s mission of promoting international commerce.

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Cape Town, South Africa, last week ,Oby Ezekwesili alongside Nigerian entrepreneurs, professionals and the Nigerian community in South Africa led by Mr Cosmos Echie (who is the acting President of the Nigerian Community Western Cape) issued a communique in which they referred to latest events in South Africa as ‘Afrophobia’.

“It was unanimously agreed that the crisis is detrimental to the spirit of African renaissance, affirmation of black heritage, progress and development. Afrophobia compromises everything that the recently brokered intra-African trade – Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement — represents and aspires to deliver,” the communique reads.

The group also asked President Ramaphosa to apologise to Nigerians and other countries whose citizens have borne the brunt of xenophobic attacks for decades.

The South African government was also advised to trigger series of actions necessary to de-escalate the brewing conflict.

“Officials of the government of South Africa must immediately desist from making any further pejorative and incendiary comments targeting Nigerians and their country and instead publicly commit to taking preventive and surveillance measures that will foreclose a repeat of Afrophobic attacks of Nigerians and other African nationals.

“The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, should rise to the demands of leadership and reach out to the President of Nigeria to trigger the series of dialogue and actions necessary for swift de-escalation of the brewing conflict between their two countries.

“The President of South Africa should offer a sincere public apology to Nigeria, other countries affected by the attacks and the entire continent for the tragic hostility and harm perpetrated against their citizens.

“The President of South Africa should send a sharp signal to South Africans and the continent by visiting the victims of the Afrophobia attacks to empathize with and reassure them of their safety in South Africa and the government should consider paying compensations for losses sustained in the attacks.

“South Africa and Nigeria should agree a mutual legal assistance cooperation scheme for tackling cases of crimes occurring among their citizens”, the communique stated further.

The group also asked “the Nigerian High Commission and Nigerians in South Africa to design a fact-based campaign to widely convey the accurate and positive narrative of the value they contribute to their host country.

“For example, South Africans must be made aware that more than 18 per cent of lecturers in their higher institutions are Nigerians. A significant percentage of the medical personnel in rural hospitals are Nigerians.

“Most Nigerians and Nigerian-owned businesses operate responsibly in legitimate and professional practices in South Africa compared to the less than one per cent of cases of shadowy activities.

“The Nigerian government should make visible effort to guarantee the safety and security of South Africans and their businesses in Nigeria.

“The umbrella organisation of South Africa- based Nigerians will be encouraged to launch a business platform to support the formalising processes for as many informal businesses of Nigerians as possible in order to better capture the value and impact being created and contributed to South Africa’s economic and social landscape.”

Ezekwesili also promised her expertise to the cause in the days ahead.

“The leaders of South Africa-based Nigerians will collaborate to promote a citizens diplomacy programme to foster stronger personal and business relationships between Nigerians and South Africans”, the former minister said.

What Ramaphosa has been saying

South Africa is home to many immigrants. However, the country’s poorest often struggle to find employment, with some South Africans blaming competition by foreigners for their plight.

Violent attacks on outsiders, particularly those from other African nations, have become a major and recurring problem in the former apartheid enclave. Some assaults have been deadly.

The attacks have stoked tensions and threatened to sour diplomatic relations between South Africa and Nigeria–two of Africa’s biggest economies.

President Ramaphosa of South Africa has repeatedly condemned the riots although he has refused to use the word ‘xenophobia’ in reference to the attacks.

The South African leader says the attacks are “a crime against our prosperity and stability as a nation. Those who want to upset our public order must expect to face the gravest impact of the law.”

Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas earlier this week, leaving an estimated 70,000 people homeless. CNN reports that the death toll, which is currently at 43, is expected to “rise drastically,” as hundreds of people are missing in the wake of the Category 5 storm.

As Dorian continued up the east coast, many outside of the hurricane’s path began exploring ways to help the victims in the Bahamas. According to CNN, one Florida man purchased $49k worth of generators and other supplies at Costco to send to the affected area, and another group of Floridian volunteers transported aid to Sandy Point via a vintage plane.

Celebrities and organizations are using their platforms to help, too. On Saturday, September 6, Rihannatweeted about a limited collection from Savage x Fenty; each sale will facilitate a donation to the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), an organization founded by Rihanna in 2012 that supports education and emergency response programs across the globe.

Per CLF’s website, the organization has created two emergency response grants to help victims of Hurricane Dorian. One grant will support Chef José Andres’s World Central Kitchen, whose team has been on the ground in the Bahamas since Tuesday, September 3, supplying food to those affected by the storm. CLF’s second grant aims to fund Direct Relief’s medical aid efforts, which will help connect victims with medical professionals in order to receive acute and long-term care. You can donate to CLF here, and learn more about Rihanna’s limited edition lingerie collection by visiting the Savage x Fenty site.

Other celebrities, including Lenny KravitzLudacrisBethenny Frankel, and Tyler Perry have participated in relief efforts, while also spreading awareness to their following on social media.

Aid has also come from major corporations, as noted by CNBC. The Walt Disney Company pledged $1 million in cash and “in-kind support” to assist with recovery efforts, while Royal Caribbean announced it would deliver supplies, food, water, and generators to the Bahamas. Companies like Carnival CorporationsNorwegian Cruise LinesLowe’s, and several others have also stepped up to assist in relief efforts.

Eric Holoman, the Sparks’ managing partner, revealed the plan to the Los Angeles Times.

“We believe Lisa deserves a statue and plan to make that part of the lease renewal discussion with AEG which should take place in the next week or two,” Holoman told the Los Angeles Times.

Lee Zeidman, president of Staples Center, Microsoft Theater and LA Live, told the Los Angeles Times he looks forward to sitting down with Sparks ownership to negotiate a new lease for the 2020 WNBA season and beyond.

“In addition, we plan to discuss the timing and placement of a permanent statue at Staples Center honoring one of the great all-time WNBA players, Lisa Leslie,” Zeidman told the Los Angeles Times.

According to Bleacher Report, Leslie will be the first woman to have a statue built in her likeness displayed outside of the Staples Center.

Leslie was drafted in the WNBA’s first draft in 1997 and played with the Sparks throughout her entire career until she retired in 2009.

She won three league MVPs, two championships, four Olympic gold medals and three All-Star Game MVPs.

Leslie was also named to eight All-Star teams and 12 All-WNBA teams, including eight first-team selections, according to Bleacher Report.

“Leslie isn’t just one of the greatest WNBA players of all time, she is one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of Southern California,” Los Angeles Times writer Arash Markazi wrote.

Leslie’s statue will be the 11th outside of the Staples Center, but it will also be the first of a WNBA player outside of a team’s home arena.

Other statues outside of Staples Center feature Los Angeles legends such as Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and Wayne Gretzky.

Following the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, more than 300 Nigerians have reportedly registered for evacuation from the country.

This is coming following the approval by the Federal Government that any Nigerian that is willing to return home should indicate interest.

According to Punch, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, on Friday, September 6, 2019, disclosed that over 300 Nigerians had registered for the exercise, adding that the time and date of departure would be announced later.

In an interview with the Newspaper, Nwonye said, “They are collating the names and as at the last one hour (3.50pm), they have registered like 300 persons and the meeting of the special envoy is ongoing, the high commissioner is there with him.”

Recall that in the heat of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and retaliatory attacks on South African businesses in Nigeria, Nwonye on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, announced that Air Peace offered free flights to Nigerians who are willing to return home from the former apartheid country.

He said in a statement, “The ministry wishes to inform the general public that following the recent unfortunate xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians in South Africa, the proprietor of Air Peace Airlines, Chief Allen Onyema, has volunteered to send a plane from September 6 to evacuate Nigerians who wish to return to Nigeria free of charge.

“The general public is hereby advised to inform their relatives in South Africa to take advantage of this laudable gesture.”

The recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and their business in South Africa started on Sunday, September 1, 2019.

According to the South African Police, five people were killed in the attacks as South African mobs launched attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians, and looted and burnt their places of business in suburbs of Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

Due to the violent attacks on Nigerians, the Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, withdrew its participation from the World Economic Forum holding in South Africa.

Nigeria also recalled its Ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Kabiru Bala, in protest of xenophobic attacks on its nationals in the country.

On August 30, 2019, ace Nigerian singer, Tiwa Savage announced her new single, ‘49-99.’

'49-99' is also set to drop later today at 4:00pm GMT. (Instagram/TiwaSavage)
’49-99′ is also set to drop later today at 4:00pm GMT. (Instagram/TiwaSavage)

At first, a few people thought it was an album, but it’s a single which dropped yesterday at 4:00 pm GMT. A listening party was also held for the single in London, England, UK on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

During the listening party, she had a Q&A session during which she revealed what ‘49-99’ means. According to her, ’49-99′ stands for ‘Forty nine, ninety-nine’ and not ‘Four thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine’ or ‘Four nine nine nine.’

Explaining the reasoning behind it, she says, “It’s a phrase that was coined by the godfather of afrobeats, Fela Kuti. It means, ‘49 sitting, 99 standing.’ Errm, suffering and smiling. For those who are not Nigerian, we have these transit buses which we call a ‘molue’ and it has 49 seats.

So instead of it to have 49 people to commute to work and back, you have 49 people sitting and double that standing, hanging… That’s just a reflection of the economy and the imbalance with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. So the song, even when you first listen to it – it’s a great record (laughs) – it’s one you can zanku to and dance to.

But I wanted something; I wanted my first global single to have a message that we are suffering and smiling and music is a powerful tool. And I wanted a title which could be a conversation starter like 49 people sitting and 99 people standing… like we’re suffering and smiling.

People then clapped for her. During the chat, she also explained the process and thought behind the song. She explains how she was in her room and got a call from Pheelz and Olamide who told her, “We created something and we think you should come and listen to it.”

On getting to the studio, she thought Olamide was trying to feature her on song. But then, when she heard the beat, she thought, “A spaceship (lift off). So I said, ‘let me sit down (laughs).”

During the chat, she also gave a shout-out to her fellow African female artistes like Yemi Alade, Omawumi, Teni, Niniola, Waje and so forth.

Currently, she’s doing an interview in New York City, New York, US.

If you do want to switch to non-hormonal birth control, Alison Edelman, MD, an OB/GYN and Director of the , suggests a copper IUD. Its even better at preventing pregnancy than birth control pills, she says. But, some people do have pretty serious cramping and bleeding on their periods when they have a copper IUD, so that’s definitely something to consider.

No matter your reason for quitting hormonal birth control, there are a few things you might expect to happen. Just remember, everyone reacts differently, so you probably wont feel all of the symptoms experienced by the women below. Theres a chance you wont feel any of them at all. Either way, most of them are likely to pass once your body adjusts.

You might get some pimples

When you’re on the Pill, your testosterone levels dip, which can lead to less breakouts, says Alyssa Dweck, MD, OB/GYN and co-author of V Is for Vagina . But when you stop taking it, those levels go back up again, so your acne could get worse, she explains.

When Melissa F. from Louisiana lost her insurance and had to go off the Pill, she started seeing acne all over her body, she tells Womens Health. She had been on the Pill for three years.

But theres good news here: For most people, the breakouts wont last. Our bodies dont like change, Dr. Edelman says. For however many years you were taking the Pill, your body got used to a continuous hormone. Now, it has to readjust to the way things were before, and during the first few months your body might freak out a bit. Acne can be a part of that.

If you didnt have any problems with acne before you started taking the Pill, the extra bumps on your face (and anywhere else) will probably go away after those few months. But, some people originally start taking the Pill because it can help clear up acne. If thats you, then Dr. Edelman says youll probably start having the same skin troubles as you did before you started the Pill once you go off it.

Youll be more (or less) horny

According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, women taking hormonal birth control may experience a lower sex drive and more discomfort during sex, thanks to the dip in testosterone levels. As a result, some women report having a higher sex drive when they go off the pill.

Yet, some people report having a higher sex drive when they start taking birth control, Dr. Edelman says, because theyre no longer worried about getting pregnant. No matter how it affected you, you can expect your body to go back to baseline when you stop taking birth control, she says.

My sex drive kind of increased and decreased when it wanted to,” Melissa says about going off the pill. “It’s like it was all out of balance.

The lack of the Pill wont make any major changes to your natural sex driveit just might feel that way because: 1. Youve been on the Pill so long that you dont remember what your natural sex drive was like, and 2. Your sex drive isnt constant. It changes throughout our lives. So your baseline sex drive when you go off the Pill might be worlds different from what it was before you started it.

Your period will change

Not to state the obvious, but birth control pills have a big impact on your period. So quitting birth control does, too. I went off the Pill about six months ago, because my husband and I want to start a family, Kaely D. from California tells Womens Health. But I wish Id gone off years ago. I love how I feel. My periods are a little irregular and unpredictable, but thats not a deal breaker for me.

Irregular periods were a slightly bigger deal for Kathy H. from North Carolina, though. She took the Pill for nine years, but went off it when she wanted to start a family . Since the Pill regulates your hormones, your period will go back to the way it was once you stop taking it, says Mary Jane Minkin, MD, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale School of Medicine. So if yours didn’t always come on time every month, you should expect to have that happen again.

And, again, itll take some time for your body to regulate, Dr. Edelman says. It can take months for your period to get back to what it was before you started the Pill. And it might never the samethough thats not the Pills fault. Many women forget that our periods change throughout our lives, she says. Just because your period was always regular before you started birth control doesnt mean itll be regular afterward. Periods sometimes naturally change, and your bodys normal period when you stop taking the Pill might be very different from what it was before you began taking it.

You might be moody

PMS is a pretty normal thing for women to feel during their periods, but for some it’s very intense. Connor D. from Virginia has a severe form of PMS called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition that causes depression, irritability and tension before menstruation. For five years, she took hormonal birth control pills to manage the symptoms, but then Connor decided to stop. I was in college and didnt trust myself to remember to take it every day when my life had little to no routine, she says. I also started to experience break-through bleeding in the middle of my cycle.

Unfortunately, quitting the Pill made her PMDD symptoms way worse. My PMDD came back full force: extreme emotional changes, unexplained sadness, anger, anxiety . I only had one good week per month.

Again, experts note that any period issues you had before you started the Pill can unfortunately come back full force once you’ve quit.

You might gain or lose weight

Not everyone loses weight when they stop taking the Pill. Some gain a few pounds. Research shows that a third of women who stop taking oral contraception lose weight, a third gain weight, and a third stay exactly the same, says Dweck. If the scale goes down, it’s most likely water weight, since being on the Pill can cause water retention. But remember: Losing water weight isnt the same as losing fat, so any lost pounds likely wont last.

You might get fewer headaches

Headaches arent super common on birth control, but because the Pill regulates your natural hormones and causes a steep drop in estrogen, some people do get headaches, especially those who are prone to migraines. For some migraine sufferers, oral contraceptives can be a trigger, according to the .

Kathy felt a change in the frequency of her headaches. I did notice that I mentally and physically felt better,” she says. “I didn’t feel as sluggish, and I had a lot less headaches than I did while taking the Pill.

You might lose some hairor get it back

Heres something you probably didnt know about your hair: every follicle is on its own little growth cycle, Dr. Edelman says. But, sometimes, when your hormones changebecause youre pregnant or because youre taking or quitting the consistent hormones in birth controlyour hair all connects to one cycle. And when that happens, large clumps can all fall out at once. Its nothing to worry about for your health, Dr. Edelman says. But it can be scary.

Luckily, its pretty rare, so most people dont have to worry about losing hair when they go off the Pill.

However, other people have a different kind of hair problem. Some women start taking birth control to help with unwanted hair growth on their chins and backs. Hair in these areas is called hirsutism, Dara Matseoane-Peterssen, MD, Chief of the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital. The Pill can help slow the growth of this hair because it tampers natural testosterone levels.

If you had problems with unwanted hair before you started birth control, youll likely have unwanted hair again after stopping it.

You might not get pregnant right away

While plenty of people quit oral contraceptives without wanting to get pregnant, its no shock that most people who leave birth control behind do it because theyre trying to start a family. But if you dont quit the Pill and then immediately get pregnant, its no reason to freak out. Remember, it can take a few months for your cycle to get back on track, Dr. Edelman says. So it might take a few tries to get pregnant.

But thats not true for everyonesome people will get pregnant immediately. So make sure youre really ready to get pregnant when you go off of your pills. Theres a myth that once you stop taking the Pill, the hormones stick around in your body for awhile, Dr. Edelman says. Some people think their body needs to flush the contraceptive hormones out, and that they wont be able to get pregnant at first, but thats not true. You can get pregnant as soon as you stop taking your pills.

Sex might feel more pleasurable

For some people, taking birth control can make sex a bit uncomfortable. Some people report pain or discomfort during sex, and luckily this should go away once someone stops taking the Pill if it was truly the culprit, Dr. Noyes says.

Typically, the discomfort happens because hormonal birth control can cause vaginal dryness, Dr. Edelman says. While lube can help with that, its sometimes not enough. Connor, for one, was happy that she no longer needed to use lube during sex once she quit the Pill.

If you struggle with uncomfortable sex because of The Pill, you might want to explore other birth control options with your doc to make sex feel good again. Just remember to be prepared. Unless pregnancy is a goal, its important to talk to a doctor about other methods of birth control if you plan on going off, Dr. Noyes says.
