Gusi Tobby  who is popularly known as the LORD T of impact  is a seasoned social impact strategist, communications expert, specialized in PR and Media relations, working across industries such as Finance, Fashion & Lifestyle, Social development, Telecoms, with a specialization in helping thought leaders maximize their influence.

Gusi Tobby Lordwilliams  has extensive social impact and volunteering experience in the international development sector of Nigeria.

She started out her career in the sector as a volunteer and research Development Support Specialist with the United Nations Volunteers corp through Girl Hub Africa, where she was responsible for facilitating volunteers training and recruitment for organizations, providing direct demand-driven technical assistance and corporate social responsibility services to private sector-led firms in Nigeria.

Gusi Toby

This inspired her to start Girl Hub Africa, Nigeria’s largest all female volunteering organization, that focuses on providing volunteering opportunities to young women where they gain meaningful experiences for gainful employment while bridging the gender gap.

Through Girl Hub Africa, she has led over ten thousand volunteers across Nigeria, within an astonishing two years of starting from different works of life, with more than five thousand youths benefitting from this initiative through gainful employment.

The Law graduate from the University of Benin is a multi-award recipient. She recently received an award as a top 100 most Influential Africans, and she is a notable alumni of GOTNI leadership centre,

Toby enjoys connecting young people to local and global opportunities where they can excel in their careers, personal brands and their businesses and she is committed to strengthening organizational systems, building capacity, and fostering sustainable growth of young people through innovative volunteering and development support.

In this interview with Esther Ijewere, Tobby shares her inspiring journey and passion for community service.

Childhood Influence

My childhood was the foundation that set me up for all that I am and more today.

You know how as a child, you are encouraged to help people, you’re eager to help at places and at events, from church, to weddings, many kinds of events and all, while other people see it as “Oversabi” – being too forward, for me those little running errands and helping out was exposing me to a world of endless possibilities and horning the many skills I didn’t know I had as well as giving me capacity to handle what anyone my age wouldn’t have dared to.

My parents were strict and intentional about the kinds of things I got involved with because I had so much energy, enthusiasm and I was inquisitive, they did well to channel all that energy to make me an enigma of success, grit, and selflessness that I am today.

Inspiration behind Gusi Tobby’s Girl Hub Africa

First the need for young people to gain meaningful work experiences. I was tired of young people complaining that after school, when they apply for jobs, the employers expect them to have some level of experience, at least 12 months to 2 years experience in that industry or field.

It baffled me to see how many people found this reason by employers to be ridiculous, in their words “I was in school, how was I supposed to get that level of work experience?”.

So with my wealth of knowledge as a professional volunteer and after getting certified as a volunteers management consultant, I decided to create a platform that encouraged young people to Volunteer/intern in organisations and firms that matches their areas of interest during holidays and they can get practical experience that can be added to their CVs, so for example, a student studying a four years course will have at least a year or two years experience to tender as a fresh graduate.

Another reason was because I wanted young people to be connected to their communities. With the advent of social media, so many people have lost touch with their communities, doing good and making sustainable impact with their time, skills, resources, and network.

So, Girl Hub Africa was created as an opportunity for young people to make a difference in any area they are interested in, with a focus on the 17 sustainable development goals by the United Nations.

The Journey So Far

It has been overwhelmingly Positive and rewarding.  From starting out with just two volunteers and using personal funds to run the brand to building a social enterprise with over ten thousand volunteers across Africa.  Girl Hub Africa is currently the largest all female volunteering network in Africa as we have both On-site and online volunteers.

3 Women Who Inspire Gusi Tobby

I’m glad you put a cap on three women because my entire life, I have drawn inspiration from so many audacious women far and near.

  • My Mother, Mrs. A.C Agusi, this woman is who I looked up to and emulated. She is selfless, down to earth, intentional, Christ like and daring, definitely the only person that could have birthed such an Icon like me *winks*
  • Next will be my mentor Ms. Esther Ijewere, if there’s one thing that inspires me most about this woman is her ability to reinvent herself, no she can not be fit into a box or stereotyped and seeing her make several strategic and global moves inspires me while reassuring me that I can indeed be more than what I see. #HigherIsCalling
  • Finally, Dr May Ikeora, I am constantly inspired to be resilient and emotionally intelligent any time I meet this woman, she inspires me to be audacious and break glass ceilings.

My Role At GOTNI And How It Impacted Me As a Person

I started out with GOTNI as a volunteer and grew to become the executive assistant to the president – Linus Okorie MFR.

Not only has my role shaped and positioned me for greatness, but it has also set me up for global opportunities as I recently was made the project coordinator for the Regulatory Compliance management program in Accra Ghana.

GOTNI has impacted my life positively, groomed me to speak with power and influence, helped me see myself and my brand as a global entity and given me the vast network of an international thought leader.

No one comes in contact or passes through GOTNI whether as a staff, volunteer, faculty, participant, or partner and remains the same.

GOTNI has shaped me to be a transformed leader creating value.

Other Projects and Activities

I host a series of events from the Business Brunch for business owners who want to learn how to create sustainable wealth, FFP – Fun, Food and Prayers, a gathering of young people to pray, seek the face of God in their lives, careers and businesses, having fun while enjoying a buffet meal, to the Lunch with LORD T, a networking event that brings together power houses in different industries to connect and have fun.

Recently I hosted the “LORD Ts Ball” , an end of the year networking ball, an award night and wine tasting event for thought leaders.

I currently landed a job as the West Africa programs director for a leading organisation, focused on research, education and advocacy that fights the exploitation of young athletes through social and economic transformation.

The Gusi Tobby Brand In 5 Years

As a household name. The brand is not one that can be stereotyped, so in 5 years I’m going to be that global thought leader that has a great family and preaches the gospel to all nations in love and with great signs through her Craft, Words, Businesses, and lifestyle.

Gusi meaning God Uses Someone Intentional. That Intentional Brand, watch out for it.

One Problem I wish To Fix In the world

“Limited Mindset” problem, a whole lot has failed because of the limiting mindsets of so many people that would have done great for the world today.

As much as I want to mention the climate crisis, unemployment, population, bad leaders etc., it all boils down to our minds. It’s a powerful tool that has created a huge problem in the world today, little wonder WISDOM is so valued because we have so many uncouth people and the painful thing is they are not aware of their bad behaviour.

So yes, limited mindset, limiting beliefs, whatever we want to call it, is the huge problem I would love to fix in the world. I already started in my space through my social media posts and the events I host.

Gusi Tobby

Being a Woman of Rubies

I literally just laughed out loud reading this question because I’m like “Have you seen me? Have you experienced me? I am the definition of a woman of Rubies”

For me it’s my Energy, my Audacious character, my ability to honour people, my wealth of knowledge, my warm and welcoming nature to mention but a few makes me a woman of Rubies

Let’s shine together, one inspiring story at a time!

In a country where mental health is seen as taboo and stigma thrives in a culture of silence, one woman set out to change this exactly three years ago.

Award-winning founder, Hauwa Ojeifo who was at that time recently diagnosed with bipolar and posttraumatic stress disorder, and had a near suicide attempt barely 2 months before, set out to change the face of mental health in Nigeria by boldly speaking her truth publicly. She founded She Writes Woman on April 17, 2016.

For three years, She Writes Woman’s mission has been to lead a movement of love, hope and support that gives mental health a voice in Nigeria. She Writes Woman pursues this mission by taking back the misinformed narrative around mental health by telling new stories, connecting help with hope and normalizing mental health conversations by providing safe places where people can talk without fear or shame. Utilising education and awareness, advocacy and policy influence coupled with innovative and sustainable solutions, She Writes Woman’s mission is simple – to create better lives for Nigerians by improving the way they think, feel and behave.

Over the past 3 years, She Writes Woman has initiated a 24/7 mental health helpline averting over 50 likely suicides and counting, and sustained the only women-only mental health support group with over 39 editions directly supporting over 600 women and girls across 4 states in Nigeria. The leading mental health movement in Nigeria has also reached over 500,000 people globally with information and knowledge that will change their attitude and behaviour towards mental health, and recently created Safe Place Nigeria; a first-ever preventative mental health life clinic for young people to address life issues such as stress, relationships, fulfillment etc early enough before they become mental health problems, proudly donated by Airtel Nigeria as part of its Airtel Touching Lives CSR Initiative.

It is no wonder that amongst the organisations’ many accolades and recognitions include Ojeifo’s prestigious award from Her Majesty the Queen of England at the Buckingham Palace in June 2018, being the only African to be nominated (and won) the MTV Europe Music Generation Change Award in Bilbao, Spain and bagging the AstraZeneca Young Health Scholarship in becoming a One Young World Ambassador to the Hague, Netherlands.

In marking her three-year milestone, She Writes Woman unveils her Mental Health Ambassadors – a group of nine diverse women who are leaders in their industries and are passionate about mental health. Among these women are Esther Ijewere (Women of Rubies), Gusi Tobby Lordwilliams (Girl Hub Africa), Glory Edozien (Inspired by Glory, 9to5 chick), Olive Emodi (Award-winning OAP), Fatima Zahra Umar (Jaruma Magazine, Divorce Diaries), Adenike Oyetunde (Amputees United Initiative), Laila Johnson-Salami (Multimedia Journalist), Wana Udobang (Award-winning Journalist), Zahra Zakariya Abdulkareem (The Umm Fariha Network).

“I am so excited to become a part of the inaugural SWW Mental Health Ambassadors. Being able to give a voice to mental health is so important to me as someone that has been clinically diagnosed”, said Laila Johnson-Salami. Speaking on why this is an important position for her, the Jaruma Magazine Chief Editor stated, “I am a survivor of depression…Being that we live in a country that is only just beginning to come to terms with the importance of mental health, I look forward to being part of educating our people on the importance of sound mental health. Lordwilliams also added, “I look forward to representing all that She Writes Woman stands for, getting more people to be aware of its mission, uphold her core values and increasing our reach this year and beyond”.

In the coming year, these mental health ambassadors will use their personal and professional network to raise awareness on mental health and collaboratively work together in creating better lives for Nigerians, says Ojeifo
