Her extensive volunteer experience spanning over 7 years has seen her actively engaged in local and international NGOs, dedicating her efforts to community development projects to empower children, youth, and women.

Erepade Isiayei’s multifaceted background and unwavering dedication to philanthropy exemplify her as a transformative force, poised to shape a brighter future for individuals and communities alike. In this interview with Esther Ijewere, she shares her inspiring story.

Childhood Influence

Everything that I am doing now is a reflection of my upbringing. Being the child of two amazing teachers I had to learn from an early age to be a role model.

Seeing my father’s generosity to the less privileged inspired me from an early age to become a giver and that validates the bible verse that says “Train up a child in the way it should go – and when it is old it will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

My upbringing in Nigeria, coupled with the loss of my parents and the responsibility of being part of a large family, has shaped me into a determined and adaptable individual. It has prepared me to face life’s challenges head-on and strive for success in my current pursuits.

The inspiration behind Erepade International Children Empowerment Foundation

My inspiration to start the Erepade International Children Empowerment Foundation can be traced back to the values instilled in me by my parents, particularly her father’s humanitarian work and dedication to education. Growing up in a household where humility and education were emphasized, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and the impact it had on individuals and communities. My father’s commitment to sponsoring scholarships out of his pocket and supporting his students in various ways left a lasting impression on me.

Secondly, due to the wide-spreading notion of “who school help”  in Nigeria and the negative effects it was been having on children and young people, I decided to come up with Erepade International Children Empowerment Foundation to promote education and entrepreneurial projects and to encourage young people to realize that education is still the key to having a competitive advantage on the world stage. So my motivation for starting the foundation stems more or less from a genuine desire to give back, inspired by my father’s humanitarianism and my own belief in being the change I want to see.

The journey so far

It hasn’t been easy for sure. I had to face issues with sponsorships, problems with project ideas and mobilization, validating the authenticity of some beneficiaries, coping with personal family issues, and focusing on work and studies.

Since starting the Erepade International Children Empowerment Foundation, the journey has been both challenging and rewarding. Establishing and running an organization dedicated to children’s education and empowerment comes with its own set of hurdles, but the impact it has made on the lives of children has been truly fulfilling.

Challenges

Some challenges I’ve had were about supporting young girls who give up in the long run or drop out of school due to teenage pregnancy. I also faced situations where children I was sponsoring were picked up by relatives in the middle of the project.

Some other challenges include; securing consistent and sustainable funding, creating awareness and outreach, collaborating with other organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions, monitoring and evaluation, volunteering, etc.

How my work has inspired other women

Through my work at the Children empowerment foundation, I have had the privilege of inspiring and empowering other women around me in various ways.

My projects have inspired other women to go to school and become independent and have also been a reason for a few of them to see the need to organize their projects to support the less privileged in their little ways. I have the case of a young woman, Toyin Bolarinwa, who amazed me with her food project in Delta State after I supported her some time ago.

Other projects and activities

I’m actively volunteering for old people and people with disabilities. I was able to complete my first book, which is in publication.

Recently I had a project to support students suffering from dyscalculia because I am also a victim of it. The highlight of my projects is: God is using me as an instrument to support a young lady to get out of a legal procedure and I’m looking forward to seeing her back to university with my other beneficiaries who are more like children to me.

What I enjoy most about my job

As the founder of the Erepade International Children Empowerment Foundation, several aspects of my job bring me immense joy and fulfillment. Here are a few things I enjoy most; I enjoy seeing the results and the success stories of my beneficiaries. It makes me feel like a mother with so many amazing daughters. I’m excited in 2023 I will have my first two graduates from the Delta State University Abraka, and Ignatius Ajuru.

Impacting lives positively, Empowering Others, creating sustainable change

In summary, what I enjoy most about my job is the ability to make a meaningful impact on children’s lives, empower individuals and communities, create sustainable change, collaborate with a passionate team, experience personal growth, and inspire others along the way. These aspects collectively make my job fulfilling and worthwhile.

3 women who inspire me and Why

Michelle Obama, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nse Ikpe Etim

And I would like to add Cynthia Adaeze Chinule because she didn’t just inspire me as a woman but she was more like an angel sent from heaven to put me back on track. She was an orphan who lost her father quite early, got into university but had no money for tuition, got the MTN scholarship, graduated with a first class in mathematics, went on to get a lot of prestigious fellowships worldwide, was featured on BBC, built a toilet for a secondary school in rivers state, founder of Maths Afrique and is still doing so many amazing things. Cynthia has taught me there are no excuses for failure in life and academics.

Advice for parents who don’t have time for their children

If I could say one thing to parents who don’t have time for their children, it would be this: prioritize quality time and meaningful connections with your children, for it is an investment that will shape their lives and your relationship with them.

Children thrive when they receive love, attention, and guidance from their parents. While it’s understandable that life can be busy and demanding, it’s crucial to carve out dedicated time to be present and engaged with your children.

Prioritizing time for your children may require some adjustments in your routines, schedules, or commitments. It’s a conscious choice to invest in the well-being and happiness of your children. The benefits of building a strong and loving relationship with your children will far outweigh any sacrifices or adjustments made along the way.

So, make the most of the time you have with your children, treasure these precious moments, and let them know they are a priority in your life.

How we can support children living in abusive homes

Supporting children living in abusive homes is of utmost importance to ensure their safety and well-being. Some actions can be taken to help such as;

recognizing the Signs, creating a safe environment, reporting suspected abuse to relevant authorities, offering emotional support, seeking professional assistance, raising awareness about child abuse and so on.  The safety and well-being of every child should always be the top priority.

Being a Woman of Rubies

I’m a woman who strives to empower and inspire others to become the best version of themselves. I would say I’m a good example of what Abraham Lincoln meant when he said “Think not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”.

To a young person who is on the verge of giving up

Don’t give up. Even in the face of challenges, remember that you have the strength and resilience to overcome them. God has already bestowed on you solutions to every problem you are facing. Just look inside yourself, and you will find the answers you seek.

How do I stay connected with my beneficiaries despite living in different countries

It’s important to stay connected and communicate directly with my beneficiaries but it’s quite difficult so I try to adapt and be flexible in finding the most effective means of staying connected based on the available resources, technological capabilities, and the specific needs of the beneficiaries. By maintaining open lines of communication, being responsive, and showing a genuine interest in their progress, I have been able to foster a strong and enduring connection despite the physical distance.

I could see him. His tiny nose, mouth, eyes, and teeny-weeny forehead. That’s a living, breathing human inside of me. He was just five months old and I could see him clearly with this 3D scan. They told me he’ll be handsome and tall. I laughed amidst my drying tears. We went back to the doctor’s office to discuss the details of the scan. And that was where they broke the news to me.

“We found something unusual in his lungs. They may be cysts. We are not sure but it could be dangerous. Let’s watch it for a few weeks but consider aborting this baby if it’s something serious,” the doctor said.

That word, ‘abortion’, rang like a bell in my head. I wasn’t sure I heard the Mandarin-speaking nurse so I said, “Shenme?” (Meaning ‘what’ in Mandarin). My precious doctor, without any hesitation, went ahead to explain the whole thing again and asked me if I was sure I wanted to keep this baby. My lips said, “Yes, of course”, but in my mind, I was screaming, “Bia, are you people normal at all? I just saw my baby’s face for the first time and here you are asking silly questions.”

Mothers day

He’s not even a fetus anymore. Why on earth would I want to abort my baby at this point? She obviously couldn’t read my mind as she went ahead to suggest that I talked over the whole situation with my husband before making any decisions. I was confused. My “confuse“ was also confused because this was a woman so reluctant about motherhood that it took her 5 years, Yes, 5 years after getting married to get pregnant. Believe it or not, the Fear of Motherhood is real.

The Fear of motherhood

I grew up in a typical middle-class Igbo family in the Eastern part of Nigeria. I loved Enugu. I still do. The serene, peaceful, family-friendly ‘come-and-retire-here’ vibe of the city was enchanting. No hustling, bustling, and annoying traffic like in the big cities. The people were mostly traders or civil servants working for the government like my mom. My mom was a teacher and she taught pretty much all her life.

I love teachers. I remember mimicking my mom a lot as a child but as I grew up, I had no desire to be like my mom. I truly love my mom but I didn’t exactly want her life. I wanted something more and I felt like the realities and demands of raising children stole her dreams and ambitions. I looked and I could see traces of this narrative all around me.

Aunties, cousins, neighbors, and friends. It’s as if the journey into motherhood was full of sacrifice and compromise and that scared the hell out of me. It looked like the moment you start having children, that’s the end—it’s over. You have to spend the rest of your life raising them primarily. I know people have different notions and even fears but this was it for me. I was the scared motherhood would lead me to oblivion and so I stalled and masked my fears with the fact that my husband had daunting school work as a medical student and he had to finish medical school first. The truth is that motherhood is not a pause on your dreams. There’s no experience like becoming a mother. It is a door opener, a destiny elevator, a purpose propeller, a mind shifter, and a pathfinder. For me, becoming a mother opened up my life.

Ugonne Ann Okonkwo

Despite all the drama that came with birthing my first child, Zite arrived safely into this world in July, 2019. Because of the complications of having him, I spent 18 months in maternity leave. It was a disruption that i didn’t know i needed until it happened. I got the opportunity to truly step back, evaluate my life and figure out what I truly wanted. That was the season I stepped into life as a visionary woman. I started a YouTube channel, wrote a book and launched it (currently working on my second book), hosted webinars and bootcamps, started a podcast, coached young women and mothers, volunteered, and worked on amazing projects with some of my mentors. Motherhood became my trigger and a game changer.

I’m sharing my story to remind a woman out here that motherhood is a miracle. Instead of thinking of this season of your life as a bad disruption, start to look at it as an enormous opportunity. Motherhood is an opportunity to practice a run-through of a deeply spiritual reality. It’s like a dress rehearsal to fulfilling purpose in grand style.

On this special mothers day, I want you to see motherhood with new eyes and be enamored by its sheer brilliance. Celebrate every kind of mother – the working mom, the stay-at-home mom, the single mom, the diaspora mom, the mom in business, the nursing mom, the career mom, the surrogate mom, the professional mom, the spiritual mom, and the waiting mom. Take some time to celebrate yourself as a mother today.

Happy Mother’s Day!

They should allow God to lead them and not be led by pressure from anyone or anything. They should know their partner and be ready to be teachable. They should understand that marriage is a journey and not a sprint. Every season has its lesson. They should also surround themselves with the right people and listen to them.

Reaching out to Guinness

The Guinness World Records website is open to anyone from any country; there’s even a section for kids. After Nowe got on board, we went back to the website, filled out the form and submitted it for approval. I applied a couple of times before they approved because it’s similar to applying for a job or school admission; acceptance isn’t automatic.

They eventually emailed us the guidelines and set up my dashboard. After my cook-a-Thon, I’ll have to send them video evidence. Their team will assess and then update my dashboard to say I’d either broken the record or failed.

The recipes for the cook-a-thon

I’ll prepare about 80 recipes, but they’ll be repetitive. I could make Jollof six times in 24 hours. 80% of the recipes will be Nigerian cuisine. I’ll be making many different types of soups, porridge, rice and pasta. It’ll be a public event that people can RSVP to attend and eat as much as they can.

Hilda Baci’s love for cooking

It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. The first meal I ever cooked myself was Jollof spaghetti when I was in Primary Four. It was so nice, my mum asked me to make it again. But I goofed. I was seven years old, and it was too much pressure.

Cooking was never my ambition, but it followed me. I’ve always been the best cook in any space. I made the best-fried rice in my Home Economics class in senior secondary school. And in university, my schoolmates would pay me to cook, then take the food to their boyfriends, pretending they made it themselves.

Venue of the cook-a-thon

If you are in Lagos, kindly go to “The Amore Gardens” where the event is taking place to cheer her on! There is also free food!

Update: Hilda won the cook-a-thon by cooking for 100 hours and 45mins
