When Tems merged forces  with Wizkid for  ‘Essence,’ the anthem catapulted the sultry singer into an unexpected stardom.  However, with her global recognition, there are many interesting facts about her that people are yet to know about.

Here are six thing you didn’t know about the singer;

On her debut EP, Tems features the voice of her mother on ’Témìládè Interlude’. The track tells the story of an unshakeable maternal instinct that reassured her mother she’d bear a daughter, whose name was destined to be: Témìládè Openiyi.

Born to a Nigerian mother and British-Nigerian father, the family moved to England for the first three years of her life, before returning to her home country.

At 17, she started to venture forwards with music, putting aside her beliefs around her voice not being sufficiently ‘feminine’. At this time, she joined the choir and started learning how to play the piano.

At 21-years-old, Kennedi Carter has made history as the youngest photographer to shoot a cover for British Vogue in its 104-year history. Carter had the privilege of photographing one of her musical idols, Beyoncé, for the December 2020 cover. The North Carolina native said she was shocked when she got the job.

“It feels like it dropped out of the sky,” Carter told British Vogue. “I’m 21… I haven’t really had many opportunities like this.”

Carter is a fine art photographer who describes her work as showcasing “overlooked beauties of the Black experience” and was handpicked by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and Beyoncé, who asked for a woman of color specifically for the shoot. This isn’t the first time Queen B has had a hand in a historic Vogue cover; in 2018, she tapped 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell as her photographer. He became the first-ever Black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover in the publication’s 126-year history.

Although Carter’s aesthetic falls in line with Beyonce’s, especially with her recent Black Is King visual album, which uplifted the Blackness across the diaspora, Carter still felt shocked due to her perceived inexperience. She is younger than Irving Penn and David Bailey who’s first Vogue covers were 26 and 23, respectively.

“I thought I wouldn’t be able to do something at this level unless I was older, with many years in the game,” she told Vogue UK. “This is for people at the pinnacle of their careers.”

The senior African American studies major at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro told British Vogue that she didn’t let nerves get to her during the two-day shoot. She said she was going with the flow, having researched how the star worked and was surprised at how much control over the shoot Beyoncé gave her.

“I had underestimated how much she’s willing to submit herself to a vision and truly become someone else’s muse,” Carter said. Adding that the star’s ability to “control her own narrative” was something that she admired and that she was “just so, so nice.”

She said she appreciates the opportunity Beyoncé has given her and other artists that may not have been recognized without her platform.

“It’s really amazing that she’s using her influence to be able to give young artists this experience, and allowing their voices to be heard,” Carter told British Vogue. “She’s opening the door for others.”

Growing up, Carter didn’t expect to be a photographer; she’d only taken a photography class in high school because she thought it was going to be easy — it wasn’t. However, she kept at it and found her passion. She credits Dana Scruggs with getting her work in front of editors. Now that she has Beyoncé on her resume being noticed shouldn’t be a problem. But even with her newfound acclaim, she said she isn’t looking to leave her family in Durham to find a big city anytime soon. But she does plan to celebrate with them.

“I think we’ll just sit outside and make a little bonfire, the four of us,” She told British. “And I’ll invite my man.”

Pop star Beyonce is on the cover of British Vogue’s December 2020 issue and she debuts on the cover with not one, not two, but three cover images! Yes, all the covers are pretty lovely.

For British Vogue’s new issue, the singer was photographed by 21-year-old Kennedi Carter.

Editor-in-chief of the magazine, Edward Enninfulsays about Beyonce, “I had the enormous honour of interviewing Beyoncé, and working with the gifted up-and-coming photographer Kennedi Carter on a 20-page fashion story. At just 21, Kennedi becomes the youngest photographer to capture a British Vogue cover. Everyone always wants to know what it’s like to work with Beyoncé and her incredible team, and the answer is… flawless. A perfectionist to the core, more than anything, she wanted her Vogue moment to be filled with positivity as this trickiest of years draws to a close. As ever with Beyoncé’s goals, she got her wish.”

In the issue, Beyonce talks about how she feels changed by the events of 2020 as well as spending a considerable portion of her creative life working to elevate black, and specifically African, voices.

Mega-superstar and philanthropist Beyonce has made an additional donation earmarked for Black-owned small businesses to the tune of $1 million according to Billboard.

Beyonce announced, through her BeyGOOD foundation this past Wednesday (Sept. 2), that she is partnering with the NAACP by donating $1 million in additional funds to help Black-owned small businesses. This is round 2 of the funding that both organizations started in July.

“Proud to announce $1M in additional funds from Beyoncé to help Black-owned small businesses. Round two of funding opens this month, with our partner NAACP.”

Back in July, The NAACP had announced on its website that it will be distributing a number of grants valued at $10,000 grants to Black-owned small businesses in Houston, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis that have been impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis.

“Over the last couple of months, the pandemic and outpours for justice throughout the Black community and across the country has been felt in every imaginable area of our lives, including in how our local businesses continue to operate,” said the organization in a press release.“The challenges of Black business owners navigating in the climate cannot be understated, as the effects of uprisings across the nation have led to many businesses being placed in dire straits due to damages and other small business needs.”

Earlier this year, the singer released her a surprise single, “Black Parade” on Juneteenth. Along with the release of the single, she launched an initiative that supports Black-owned businesses. The talented artist and philanthropist had listed a directory of Black-owned businesses that was created and curated by @ZerinaAkers with @black.owned.everything on her website. The site lists several hundred Black-owned companies.

As the pandemic continues to impact black-owned businesses across the globe, some of the celebs we know and love are working to provide business owners the opportunity to keep their doors open, and Beyonce is one of them!

Through her global initiative, BeyGOOD, Beyonce has developed a program in partnership with the NAACP to provide black-owned small businesses with the capital they need to pull through the pandemic. The BeyGOOD Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund will provide $10,000 grants to businesses in need.

“Over the last couple of months, the pandemic and outpours for justice throughout the Black community and across the country has been felt in every imaginable area of our lives, including how our local businesses continue to operate,” the NAACP said in a statement.

“The challenged of Black business owners navigating in the climate cannot be understated, as the effects of uprisings across the nation have led to many businesses being placed in dire straits due to damages and other small business needs.”

The grant applications is open to black-owned small business owners in the states of Houston, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. Applicants will need to provide and estimate of property damage or replacement as a result of the pandemic. According to the NAACP website, applications are due by July 18th, and recipients will be notified by the 31st.

“The NAACP is proud to partner with BeyGOOD to help strengthen small businesses and to ensure economic empowerment for Black businesses.”

The initiative is similar to that of the economic stimulus package, which includes an application for grants provided by the United States Small Business Administration. The SBA is also giving grants in the amount of $10K to business impacted by the pandemic.

Adidas and Beyoncé introduced the first adidas x IVY PARK collection, which goes on sale in stores and online on Jan. 18, 2020.

Complemented by four footwear styles, adidas x IVY PARK reinterprets iconic adidas classics with statement colors and a fresh design approach.

The collection is available online at adidas.com and in select stores next year. Prices range from $25 for accessories to $250 for outerwear.

The partnership with adidas serves as the basis for the Queen to relaunch Ivy Park, the athleisure company she co-created and is now the sole owner of after buying out Topshop owner and billionaire Phillip Green in November 2018. 

Barbadian singer Rihanna alongside American singers Beyonce and Taylor Swift have made Forbes list of 100 most powerful women.

Forbes on Thursday released its list of 100 Most Powerful Women list for 2019. The list comprised of women who have made a profound impact in six categories: business, technology, finance, media & entertainment, politics & policy, and philanthropy.

On the newly released Forbes’ list, Rihanna ranks as number 61 ahead of Beyonce, who is positioned at number 66 and Taylor Swift at 71. Other female entertainers on the list are Ava DuVernay (79) and Reese Witherspoon (90).

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, the Barbadian singer has sold over 250 million records. She is one of the world’s best-selling music artists. She has earned 14 number-one singles and 31 top-ten singles in the US, and 30 top-ten entries in the UK. Her accolades include nine Grammy Awards, 13 American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, and six Guinness World Records.

From fashion to cosmetics, Rihanna has been on a trail of entrepreneurial ventures. Her cosmetic brand Fenty Beauty was launched in September 2017. Fenty Beauty was named one of Time magazine’s best inventions of 2017.

Time included her on its annual list of the 100 most influential people in 2010, 2015, and 2019. From 2011 to 2015, she appeared in the top three on the Forbes Top-Earning Women in Music list with earnings of $45 million, $57 million, $55 million, $64 million, and $80 million respectively.

Jay-Z and Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter has won a songwriting award at the age of seven.

Blue Ivy bagged the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at Sunday’s Soul Train Awards for co-writing her mother’s hit Brown skin girl, a song celebrating dark- and brown-skinned women.

Blue Ivy gives a vocal performance that opens and closes the song, which also features Wizkid and Saint Jhn.

The Carters were not at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas to accept the honour named after the legendary Motown songwriting duo Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson.

Blue Ivy shares the win with Beyonce, Jay-Z, St Jhn and several other co- writers.

This week could get even better for Blue Ivy.

 

Beyonce had Nigerian superstars, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade and other African artistes on the album “The Gift”. However, most people are not aware that Niniola also worked on the album alongside other Nigerians.

The singer wrote and performed the track “Find Your Way Back” which contains elements of her hit single “Maradona”.

Niniola took to her Instagram page to reveal that working on the album was a dream come true and thanked fans, her team, and family for their support.

In her words, MARADONA!!!” The Song that keeps giving! When the advance royalty cheque comes in from featuring on @Beyonce’s Album, “THE GIFT”, and you can’t but give thanks to God. ???? Being a contributor to the “Find Your Way Home” Song off Queen B’s Album was a dream come true for me and I cannot wait to share with you, greater news and opportunities that this has opened me up to, internationally.
