Born in Sudan, raised in Australia and now living in New York, top model Ajak Deng broke into the modelling world about a decade ago, when she was scouted while still in secondary school.

She made her runway debut at Melbourne Fashion Week, and has since stormed the runway for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Growing up was no walk in the park for her, as her family fell victim to the civil war in South Sudan which led them to flee to a refugee camp in Kenya where they spent three years. After losing her mother to malaria, the Australian government moved her family out to Melbourne when she was 11 years old, and that was the beginning of her runway fate.

Although given her sculpted physique, stunning skin tone and striking features, you’d think a career in modelling was predestined for her, however her initial dream was to fight in the army.

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald about becoming a model, Ajak said:

“I wanted to join the army but my teachers at Kurunjang Secondary College told me no, that it wouldn’t be for me.

They knew I loved to travel and had a thing for fashion and suggested modelling, and since then I haven’t looked back.”

Ajak is very hard to miss, and you’ve probably noticed her in a magazine editorial or storming the runway during fashion week. Despite this, as per usual in any industry, her race poses a problem as she doesn’t get booked as much as other white models do. To protest this, in February 2016, the model announced in a now deleted Instagram post saying:

“I am happy to announce that I am officially done with the fashion industry, I will be moving back to Australia in order to live the life that I fully deserved, which is real life. I can no longer deal with the fakes and the lies… My life is too short for this dramatic life.”

We need more models like this shaking the table so that black models get their coins for their good and hard work!!

Instead of begging for alms after she lost her husband, Fatima Abdullahi, a mother of four decided to go into the business of selling bean cake popularly known as “akara.”

Surprisingly, she makes an average of N5000 daily from selling akara and pap, known as “koko”.

Fatima  said she started her business about 10 years ago after the death of her husband because there was no one to help her and her kids, and she hated the idea of begging.

I started with as little as N3000, and gradually expanded the business by adding sweet potato and now I make an average of N5000 daily, about N150,000 monthly. Although the business is stressful and dangerous because you have to seat by the fire every day, it is helping me to pay the bills, take care of my children. At least I can afford to pay school fees for my children and medical bills when the need arises. Whether a widow or housewife, you can start a business, no matter how small, so as to have financial freedom,” she said.

In 2015, UNICEF reported that one in four girls and one in ten boys in Nigeria experience sexual violence before the age of 18. And according to a survey by Positive Action for Treatment Access, over 31.4 percent of girls surveyed said their first sexual encounter had been rape or forced sex of some kind. Narrowing it down a little, in Lagos, the number of reported sexual assault victims increased by 100% between 2006 and 2015; and between 2015 and 2017, it went up by 200%.

(Photo: Premium Times)

But the Lagos State government, thankfully, looks like it is taking a definite stand against sexual assault and related offences. Yesterday, four Special Offences and Sexual Offences courts were commissioned in Lagos by the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, the state’s Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule, and the Lagos State First Lady, Mrs Bolanle Ambode. Two of the courts will adjudicate on economic and financial crimes, while the other two will try sexual offences. The state is also working on expanding the operations of the DNA and Forensic Centre and Chemistry section.

If you’re wondering why this is huge news, it’s because this is the first of its kind in Nigeria. That’s right, after 58 years of existence, Nigeria (the government) has yet to take sexual offences seriously. Between 2015 and now, the DSVRT and Mirabel Centre (both in Lagos) have handled over 400 cases of sexual offences while 376 cases are being prosecuted in the various courts. And, there are currently about 600 pending sexual offense cases in the high court of Lagos, not including the ones in the Magistrate courts.

Dedicated courts for sexual crimes are now more mandatory than ever. The hope that we all have is that one, the establishment of these courts will facilitate faster hearing and trial of sexual crimes and get survivors justice and closure; two, that this will jumpstart a nationwide establishment of special courts like these; and three (this the most important), that the judges who hear these sexual cases will really not be the kinds who will blame the victim.

But more than anything, thank you, Lagos. Other states need to absolutely follow.

In her first TV interview since leaving the White House, Michelle Obama, former U.S. First Lady had a chat with Ellen Degeneres about her family’s  life in Washington, D.C. and the awkward gift she received from the Trumps at the Inauguration.

Michelle opened up about life after leaving the white house and the projects the family are working on.

Here are a few of the things she said in the interview:

1. On what she does after leaving the white house

“Nothing, i have all the time in the world. We are good, the girls are fine. Barrack is working and we take holidays. I wake up anytime i want and there really is no bid deal.”

2. On living in a regular house

We live in a neighborhood down the street from the white house. We have door bells now and i receive visitors. It is such a nice thing.

3. On if she feels weird living not far from the white house.

“We live in this neighborhood because we want our youngest daughter to finish high school in the school she has been since second grade. So it does not feel weird that we are so near the white house. I feel we transferred  the love and warmth we had in the white house to pour current house.”

4. On putting the house together

“I put the house together, together with my team. Sasha got a two room suite and she decorated it all by herself. Her sister got a small room up in the attic. {You know, you don’t waste rooms on college girls} Barrack  got the worst part of this decoration house deal. His office space is small and so, he is always hating on Sasha.”

5. On what she feels about the situation in the country.

People are afraid and then, there are people who feel good about the situation in the country. I learnt in the white house that we should care for each other- live for hope because that is all we have. I encourage you to love each other and show empathy.  Forget what they are saying in Washington.
