Though the likes of Tuface Idibia, Davido, Wizkid, Olamide, Flaour and the rest have continued to dominate the country’s music scene, recent events show that female singers are no longer confortable playing second fiddle. Unlike the days when it was all about the boys, some music chics are gradually making big moves that will eventually narrow the gap and change the narrative.

Just recently, Effyzzie Music Group singing sensation and mama Africa, Yemi Alade, teamed up with American Hip-Hop/Rap star Rick Ross to serve up the remix of her buzzing single Oh My Gosh. The singer’s Instagram is presently flooded with the behind-the-scene shots and videos of the new single, which was directed by Ryan Snyder. The song, which was produced by ace producer DJ Coublon, with strings by talented guitarist Fiokee, was mixed and mastered by raving sound engineer, Swaps. Meanwhile, the original version, also produced DJ Coublon, was released in 2018, with a video directed by Ovie.

Yemi, who said she is keen on taking Africa to the world with her songs, said the track is already trending in Nigeria and UK. The song, according to source, will be featured on Yemi Alade’s album titled Woman Of Steel, which will drop later this year. The work will feature collaborations with prominent acts like Rick Ross, Duncan Mighty, Funke Akindele, and Angelique Kidjo.

Earlier in the year, the songwriter hit a one hundred million view mark on her YouTube platform and emerged the second Nigerian artiste to attain the feat. Alade made this achievement with the video of her hit single, Johnny, which she released in 2014. She has performed around the world and shared the stage and songs with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Shina Peters, Wizkid, Becca, M.I, Waje and others.

Just when it seems the buzz had subsided, Universal Music Group (UMG), the world leader in music-based entertainment, announced an exclusive global recording agreement with Tiwa Savage, one of Africa’s biggest stars and an artiste whose success spans music, fashion, film and television.

Under the agreement, her future music will be released internationally through UMG’s operations in more than 60 countries worldwide, with projects executively produced by Efe Ogbeni of Regime Music Societe and Vannessa Amadi-Ogbonna.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, and later received a scholarship to study Professional Music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts before embarking on a career that has seen her achieve creative success across a multitude of mediums, 2018 remains Tiwa’s most successful year to date, which saw the singer-songwriter crowned Best African Act by the MTV European Music Awards, making history as the first female to win the accolade.

In the same year, she also became the first African female to sell out London’s IndigO2. In December, Tiwa was handpicked by Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin to perform alongside Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and Jay Z live at the Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg to a 70,000 strong audience and millions across the globe in celebration of the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth.

An accomplished live musician, she has performed around the world, including a notable performance at Jay Z’s Made In America festival in Philadelphia in 2017. Tiwa was named one of the world’s Top 100 Inspirational Women in Fashion by Vogue US then later featured in British Vogue’s December 2018 issue as one of 10 women that are changing the face of music globally. She has released a string of singles including Mr Lova Lova ft Duncan Mighty, Diet and Tiwa’s Vibe all of which hit the No. 1 spot across charts within Africa, securing her position as one of Afrobeats leading artists.

A resilient force within Africa’s ever-growing entertainment industry, she has also managed to carve a career as a reputable songwriter, conquering the charts in Africa whilst balancing her roles as an entrepreneur, mentor and mother.

Throughout her career, Savage has been active in her philanthropic endeavours, supporting various youth engagement organisations and breast cancer screening projects across Nigeria and further afield. Through her work with MTV’s Shuga, Savage is also keen to share further knowledge of HIV/ AIDS prevention and awareness within the continent. One of Africa’s most followed women on social media, Savage was the first African female to represent Pepsi as an ambassador and represents leading global brands including Nike, MegaGrowth Hair, MTN and Star Beer.

Throughout summer 2019, Tiwa will play a string of international festivals including the UK’s Wireless Festival, Afropunk in Paris and Oh My! Festival in Amsterdam.Commenting on the deal, Tiwa Savage said, “My biggest goal is to make Africa proud. I’m so excited for this moment and I’m thankful to Sir Lucian Grainge and my new UMG family for their belief in my dreams. I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my career and I’m more ready than I have ever been.”

Adam Granite, EVP Market Development, Universal Music Group said, “We are looking forward to partnering with Tiwa and her team to help her music reach new audiences around the world. As one of Africa’s most successful, influential and dynamic singer-songwriters, Tiwa has truly global ambitions and UMG is committed to help her in achieving them.”

Efe Ogbeni and Vannessa Amadi-Ogbonna of Stealth Management said, “We’re very proud to be a part of this ground-breaking partnership between Tiwa Savage and Universal Music Group. Tiwa is undoubtedly the most hardworking and talented female artist crossing over from Africa to the rest of the world, and UMG has demonstrated its commitment to the Continent by placing its formidable machinery behind her amazing career. Partnerships like these symbolise the hopes and dreams of so many talented artists back home in Africa and it is an honour to be the executive producers of her project.”

In a moving message to Tiwa on her new deal, Mavin Records Boss Don Jazzy said, “Our darling Tiwatope. We at Mavin would like to say a very big thank you for being such an inspiration to all of us, a friend, a sister. It’s been an epic journey with you and we are very proud of what we have achieved together.“As you start this new chapter in your life we want you to know that we are solidly behind you and can’t wait for the world to see what we have always believed you can be. Your jersey as the First Lady of Mavin will forever be yours, as we do not intend to fill that position with anyone else.

“We love you from the bottom of the heart and pray GOD’s blessings to continue to follow you. Amennnn.” Meanwhile, X3M Music has announced the departure of one of its recording artistes Simisola Ogunleye, following the expiration of her recording contract. The Lagos-based label confirms, in a statement signed by A&R executive Vincent Nwanze, that both parties have determined to not renew the contract.

In a career that is still unfolding, Simi as she’s fondly called, has emerged one of the most remarkable music talents of her generation; combining a peerless skill for writing and arranging, with a vocal prowess like none before her.

That special voice, an unassuming look, and writing talent are what attracted her to X3M when she was signed in 2014. She immediately warmed hearts with the hit single Tiff, which earned her a Headies nomination. Her debut album for X3M (her career second) was released to local and international acclaim in September 2017, and named album of the year in 2018, by The Headies Awards.

Her final album for X3M music Omo Charlie Champagne was released on April 19, 2019. X3M music is reputed to have a bias for original, alt music; especially in an industry dominated by pop.

‘We only sign artistes that we love and believe in. We know our taste in music is rather different; but we only sign talents who meet that taste. Fortunately, we have been able to find millions of music lovers here and abroad, who share similar tastes, as is evident in the success of all the artistes we have worked with, including Simi, who is without any doubt one of the biggest music talents in the country today…’

Though nothing has be said regarding Simi next move, many suggest that the Jamb Question singer might be working out something with her newly wedded husband and singer, Adekunle Gold. On the other hand, rumour has it that the singer might be on the verge of inking a new music deal with an international music platform soon.

This is the “other narratives” on people living with HIV/AIDS. Read a sister, first! “I am a healthcare professional. And what I have witnessed so far in my line of duty leaves me with little hope for the marital institution. The level of deceit that people perpetuate in marriages makes me wonder why anybody would even get married to someone they can’t afford to open up to-when at their lowest ebb.

All along, the sermon has been ‘de-stigmatization’ of persons living with HIV/AIDS. But I am here to tell you that an average person infected with the virus isn’t going to embrace sincerity easily…not even to a spouse.

Most of them even lie to their healthcare providers!

Do you know that in most cases, their spouses are kept in the dark? And the infected would feel no guilt sleeping with a spouse…even when they are fully aware of their HIV status? Here at the health centre, I have handled tons of cases of persons whose spouses and family have entirely different idea of their health challenges.

There was the case of a young lady who claimed that her boyfriend infected her, but what was remarkable was the staunch support that her brother (living overseas) gave to her. It was not until much later that we learned that he actually had the impression that she was battling kidney problem.

The brother wept like a baby over the phone. He didn’t understand why she had to lie to him…knowing that he would still stand by her in any circumstances. The one that particularly broke my heart was that of a nursing mother who said she got married at age 19 and her husband is the only man that she’s known all her life.

I gave her the only suggestion that came to mind at the time…to investigate her husband’s health status. She told me that she’s mostly heard him complain about malaria. I still insisted she found her way to his office drawer or something. She took my advice and found a way to gain entry into his office…without his knowledge. True to my suspicion, the evidence was there because I told her what drugs to look out for.

A few of my colleagues eventually became involved in the plan and further findings revealed that the man had been HIV positive for some time and had actually been going for his anti-retroviral in another state.I have noticed uncanny evil intent in a lot of people living with the virus. Almost like they have convinced themselves that whoever crosses paths with them deserves to be infected, too.I am yet to come across a story of an infected person clearly communicating his status to an unsuspecting partner.

Another observation of mine is the needless lies from the women battling the virus…especially the married ones. These women lie, not just about their marital status, but they also give false identities about themselves.o you know that an average person (especially men) living with HIV/AIDS would rather let himself believe that someone poisoned him…even when he is fully aware of his medical diagnosis?

You can’t imagine how many families such ‘poison’ allegations have torn apart, even when the infected knows very well what their medical situation is.When will Nigerians understand that HIV infection is not a death sentence and, therefore, these deceptions are unnecessary? ’’

FROM OBY:

The “de-stigmatisation” messages are loud enough.

And we are adjusting. But you also stigmatise yourself via these deceptions.

What’s more…it is pure EVIL to knowingly infect another. The narratives should begin to aim at tugging at people’s conscience too.

The danger of keeping a spouse in the dark or lying to family about your health issues is that in a bid to cover your tracks, you miss out on holistic medical attention and support system.…as you would often find excuses to even go for your medicals or hide to take your drugs, etc. That, to me, is STRESS. And it kills faster than a lot of diseases.

Anybody living with HIV owes it to God and humanity to ensure that the virus isn’t passed on through them. I would prefer that everyone finds the courage to live their truth but it’s OK to want to keep your status to yourself. Just don’t hurt others knowingly.

Having the urge to hurt another with your status clearly shows an imbalance in one’s mental state. What you should do is SEEK HELP. And not yield to that bitter impulse…no matter how wronged you feel. Also…it is a moral obligation to make efforts to know your status. That way…you get the help you need on time and most importantly-you don’t unknowingly pass “stuff” to anybody.

Remember…it can happen to ANYBODY.

HIV is no death sentence!

Beyoncé has revealed the extreme lengths she went to loose weight for her headline slot at Coachella last year, following the birth of Rumi and Sir Carter.

The 37-year old singer weighed 218lbs on the day her twins were born in June 2017 and embarked on a gruelling vegan diet in a bid to lose weight, but vowed ‘never to push myself that far again’.

Speaking in her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, released yesterday, she said: ‘In order for me to meet my goals, I’m limiting myself to no bread, no carbs, no sugar, no dairy, no meat, no fish, no alcohol… I’m hungry’.

She also added that;

“It’s not like before when I could rehearse 15 hours straight. I have children. I have a husband. I have to take care of my body. Just trying to figure out how to balance being a mother of a six-year-old and of twins that need me, and giving myself creativity, and physically, there’s a lot to juggle.

‘I definitely pushed myself further than I knew I could and I’ve learned a very valuable lesson. I will never, never push myself that far again. I feel like I’m just a new woman in a new chapter of my life and I’m not even trying to be who I was. It’s just so beautiful that children do that to you.’

Netflix has acquired its first animated series from Africa titled “Mama K’s Team 4,” produced by South Africa’s award-winning Triggerfish Animation Studios and British kids’ and family entertainment production company CAKE, Variety is reporting.

The series was created by Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema who was one of the eight winners of the Triggerfish Story Lab in 2015.

The series follows the story of four teenage girls living in a futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia, who are recruited by a retired secret agent to save the world. The series is designed by the Cameroonian artist Malcolm Wope.

Netflix and Triggerfish are now collaborating to search for female, African writers to join the creative team for the series.

Mulendema said of her inspiration for creating the series

In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero.

Melissa Cobb, vice president of original animation at Netflix said:

In addition to giving African writers a global platform on which to be heard, we are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga’s incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix.

‘Mama K’s Team 4’ has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to.

Since the launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017, every product that they’ve released has had people rushing to the nearest Sephora in hopes that it doesn’t sell out. They’ve conquered the beauty world in terms of inclusivity and have won hearts with their amazing branding and marketing campaigns. Now they are set to conquer the world of skin care and we are so stoked.

The details have yet to be announced, but here’s what we know so far: According to Page Six, “Fenty Skin” was officially listed as a trademark on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website as of March 25, 2019 (i.e. less than a month ago). You might remember that there were rumors of a Fenty skin-care line coming in September of 2017 after a fan found items like creams, lotions, gels, and cleansers, registered under “House of Fenty.” But besides the brand’s best-selling Body Lava, we’ve yet to see other complexion-care products from Fenty.

According to Allure, Since then, trademarks have been filed under the new “Fenty Skin” label, including “medicated and non-medicated skincare, soap, body care and personal care products (excluding color cosmetics, perfume and other fragrance-only products), and related accessories such as kits, tools and applicators.”

60 year old Black Panther actress Angela Bassett, who defies her age has shares the 5 beauty tips that she swears by.

Speaking to Allure magazine, Angela talks about inquiring minds constantly ask “What do you do, what do you eat, how do you stay…?” and admits that ”It feels good that they wonder,”

The phrase ‘black don’t crack’ rings true with the stunning actress who appears to be aging backwards. So, what is the secret to her flawless, youthful glow? Angela shares her 5 must-have products with Madame Noire.

Take a look and see if you can’t pick up some tips to preserve your skin!

Micellar Water

Angela Bassett was serious about making sure our skin is clean before we even begin to apply any products. She explained, ‘It’s all about keeping the skin as clean as you can using the micellar water. Make sure you have all the pollutants, the debris and dead skin cells are removed and your skin can breathe before you put any moisturizers or creams on.” We love Urban Hydration Micellar Water in Kiwi and Pomegranate. You get a good amount of product that will last you a few months and the best part is this line is created by a Black woman.

Darker Skin Tones Foam Cleanser

Angela Bassett partnered with skincare expert Dr. Barbara Sturm to create a line of products specifically for women of color. We’re here for her foam cleanser ($70.00, Molecular-Cosmetics.com) which contains hyaluronic acid to provide instant moisture to your face.

After you wash your face, Bassett instructs to continue with your “serums and creams.” A serum packs a lot of great ingredients for your skin in a more absorbable form. This is great to apply right after you clean your face. Personally, I use my jade roller to help the product settle into my face even better.

Darker Skin Tones Face Cream Rich

This face cream is perfect for combination skin. This rich formula is perfect for overnight care and to use to let your skin replenish itself.

Nyakio Manketti and Mafura Anti-Aging Oil

While Bassett didn’t mention using facial oil, this is a must-have in your beauty routine. Oil is great for replenishing your skin and locking in moisture. At night, I apply it after my moisturizer to really help lock in everything. I’m obsessed with Naykio Manketti and Mafura Anti-Aging Oil. It helps restore the skin and is rich in pure, cold-pressed oils. It’s also 100% vegan.
