The first edition was held virtually during the COVID-19 lockdown, with the second edition marking the first in-person ceremony in 2021 in Mississauga, Ontario.

In July 2024, Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan officially assumed her role as Chief of the Defence Staff, becoming the first woman to lead the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Her appointment marks a historic milestone for Canada’s military and a powerful testament to her 35-year career of exceptional service and leadership.

Trailblazing Career Spanning Over 35 Years

Lieutenant-General Carignan’s career is a testament to resilience and dedication. Over her 35 years of service, she has achieved numerous firsts, including becoming the first woman in CAF history to command a combat arms unit in 2008. Her extensive experience includes leading over 10,000 soldiers as commander of the 2nd Canadian Division and spearheading crisis operations, such as flood relief efforts in Quebec.

Her international deployments to Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Syria, as well as her leadership of NATO Mission Iraq from 2019 to 2020, underscore her capability to navigate complex global challenges.

Since 2021, she has served as Chief, Professional Conduct and Culture at National Defence, working to transform the culture within the CAF. Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Cross.

Lieutenant-General Carignan assumes leadership at a critical time. With evolving security threats, the CAF’s role in defending Canada, supporting NATO allies, and providing humanitarian assistance during natural disasters has never been more vital.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his confidence in Lieutenant-General Carignan’s ability to lead the CAF into the future, stating:

The African Heritage Centre (AHC), a vision led by Michael Emeka Dibua and incorporated as a nonprofit in March 2023, represents a groundbreaking initiative to preserve, celebrate, and empower the heritage of African and Afro-Caribbean peoples. Designed to be a multi-purpose facility in Ontario, Canada, the Centre aims to become a global hub for cultural exchange, learning, and community development.

Three remarkable women—Marsha BennettAnnette Salfarie, and Nene Judy Akintan—are playing pivotal roles in driving this vision forward, leveraging their expertise and passion to ensure the Centre becomes a beacon for unity and empowerment.

Marsha Bennett: Advocacy and Empowerment in Action

As Interim Public Relations Director of the AHC, Marsha Bennett is committed to amplifying its vision. With a background in healthcare and legal studies, Marsha brings years of experience in advocacy and community service. She founded BENNETT LEGAL, through which she continues to serve her community while preparing to begin law school this fall.

Marsha believes the AHC is critical for reclaiming African narratives and challenging the myths and falsehoods surrounding people of African descent. “This Centre will not only celebrate our heritage but also inspire the next generation to build legacies rooted in truth, resilience, and unity,” she says.

Annette Salfarie: Leadership for Cultural Preservation

Annette Salfarie, a Special Advisor for the City of Toronto, brings her extensive leadership experience to the AHC. Formerly the President of the Toronto and Region Chapter of COMTO, the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials, Annette is known for her ability to foster meaningful connections and drive impactful initiatives.

Her unwavering passion for preserving African and Caribbean roots aligns seamlessly with the AHC’s mission. “The African Heritage Centre will be a place where our shared history is celebrated, and our future generations are inspired to embrace and preserve their heritage,” Annette emphasizes.

Nene Judy Akintan: Mentorship and Community Building

Entrepreneur, author, and advocate Nene Judy Akintan contributes her multifaceted expertise to the Centre’s vision. With over 20 years of success in banking, entrepreneurship, and real estate, Nene’s leadership extends to her family nonprofit, I AM. I CAN. I WILL, which supports minority women and children.

Nene views the AHC as a transformative space for fostering understanding, collaboration, and appreciation for African excellence. “Our history, culture, and achievements deserve to be celebrated and shared with the world. The AHC will be a unifying force for our communities,” she affirms.

Under the guidance of its visionary, Michael Emeka Dibua, and champions like Marsha Bennett, Annette Salfarie, Nene Akintan,  Theodore Njoh Koum, Gisele Libawo, Efuange Khumbah, Matthew Ogbulafor, and members of its existing committees, the African Heritage Centre is more than just a facility—it is a cultural citadel for present and future generations.  And will feature spaces like a digital museum, youth and vocational training hubs, performing arts studios, and recreational facilities, the AHC is designed to be a comprehensive resource for education, innovation, and celebration.

Under the visionary leadership of HRH Adejisola Atiba and her formidable team, Power of Inclusion: A Look Within #POI24 powered by the Council of Nigerian Professionals (CNP) and Council of African Professionals (CAP) brought four impactful days of dialogue, connection, and celebration. This year’s event focused on fostering meaningful conversations around inclusion, equity, and diversity in various facets of society.

Each day featured powerful discussions led by distinguished speakers and panelists, exploring critical themes such as governance, technology, NGOs, religion, and finance in advancing inclusion. These conversations were designed to inspire actionable change and create a stronger foundation for inclusive communities.

The grand finale, the in-person Awards and Gala Night, moderated by Taiwo Julius, was a spectacular celebration of leadership, culture, and excellence. It recognized outstanding individuals and organizations championing the cause of inclusion, leaving attendees inspired and hopeful for a more equitable future.

Chidimma’s achievement is monumental, as she becomes the highest-placed Black African woman in Miss Universe since South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi won in 2019. Speaking after the competition, Chidimma expressed pride in her accomplishment, saying:

“I’m so proud of myself, and I just made history.”

Her inspiring journey, however, was not without challenges.

A Complicated Start

Born and raised in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, Chidimma first competed in the Miss South Africa contest. Despite her South African upbringing, her participation sparked xenophobic trolling and online abuse, with some critics questioning her right to represent the country. The controversy and doubts about her nationality led her to withdraw from the South African pageant circuit and embrace her Nigerian heritage, competing in the Miss Nigeria competition, which she won.

Chidimma’s journey is one of perseverance. Despite the trauma of public scrutiny and xenophobic abuse, she remained steadfast. Even in the face of adversity, Chidimma used her platform to advocate for change, particularly focusing on issues like gender-based violence—a cause close to her heart.

Her confidence to continue her pageantry journey was reinstated by the Silverbird Group, owned by Ben and Guy Murray-Bruce, who encouraged her to compete for the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN). Their unwavering support, alongside that of countless others, propelled her to win Miss Universe Nigeria, a stepping stone to her current titles as Miss Universe Africa and Oceania and First Runner-Up at Miss Universe 2024.

A Historic Achievement

At Miss Universe 2024, Chidimma shone brightly, representing not just Nigeria but also the resilience of African women. Her accomplishments bring pride to Nigeria and offer a powerful narrative of triumph over adversity. She now holds the title Miss Universe Africa and Oceania, a prestigious recognition highlighting her extraordinary grace, talent, and advocacy.

Chidimma’s journey goes beyond pageantry. A law student and a former netball player, she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to empowerment and change. For many organizations, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are initiatives that come as an afterthought, often tacked on in response to demands rather than woven into the fabric of the company. Tori Bell, however, is changing this narrative by helping businesses make DEI a foundational principle from day one. With her company, Inclusion Unpacked, she’s setting a new standard for workplaces that are not only diverse but also supportive and inclusive.

The Spark: A Journey from Investment Banking to DEI Advocacy

Bell’s passion for DEI began early in her career while working in investment banking in Atlanta, GA. As an analyst and associate program manager at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, she had a front-row seat to the challenges of recruiting and retaining diverse talent in a field dominated by homogeneity. This experience inspired her to dive deeper into DEI work, later joining Jopwell, a career platform for minority students and professionals backed by notable investors, including Magic Johnson.

Reflecting on her time there, Bell shared with AFROTECH™, “What I saw during my time there was that you can hire diverse individuals into these major companies, but if they’re not prepared to support them it’s kind of like you’re yelling into a void.” She recognized the limitations of simply hiring diverse talent without creating a welcoming environment and holistic support system to help them thrive.

Facebook’s Influence and the Birth of Inclusion Unpacked

Bell’s journey then took her to New York, where she joined Facebook (now Meta) as a university recruiter before moving up to manage internal culture and community initiatives. Noticing a lack of representation and connection among Black women in tech, Bell founded an Employee Resource Group (ERG) for Black women at the company. The group quickly grew, reaching over 3,000 members globally, and it became clear to Bell that there was an urgent need for more intentional and structured DEI initiatives across tech and beyond.

Her experiences at Facebook solidified her belief in the importance of embedding DEI practices from the start. “Why don’t we capture companies early and help them embed diversity into the ethos of their companies, versus having all of these reactive programs?” she said. This vision led to the launch of Inclusion Unpacked in 2022, backed by Columbia Business School, where Bell earned her MBA.

How Inclusion Unpacked Works

Inclusion Unpacked helps founders and organizations navigate their DEI journeys by first assessing their current practices through an onboarding quiz. This helps tailor a subscription plan based on their needs and company size, giving them access to a network of seasoned DEI professionals. Inclusion Unpacked’s experts offer more than 200 years of combined DEI experience, providing guidance to build inclusive workplaces that stand the test of time.

Through Inclusion Unpacked, Bell aims to reach startups and emerging companies to instill DEI values right from the beginning. As she told AFROTECH™, “I would love every new company that’s emerging to be an Inclusion Unpacked member company, and bake diversity and inclusion into the ethos of their business early on.” For Bell, the mission is personal—she envisions a future where the next generation of Black women, whether in corporate or entrepreneurial spaces, can thrive in environments that are truly supportive.

From Tinapa to KORA: The Journey Begins

Victoria’s foray into the entertainment world began with her involvement in the Tinapa International Trade Expo, an experience that set the stage for her expansive career. However, it was her role as a bilingual presenter at the KORA All Africa Music Awards that truly cemented her place in the industry. This prestigious opportunity not only showcased her bilingual skills but also opened doors for her to become the Personal Assistant to the President of KORA and later, the Line Producer for the awards show. Before she made her mark in Canada, Sophia was already a prominent figure in the Nigerian media industry. As co-owner, senior producer, and content writer at JAAS Pictures Media, a video production company in Lagos, she produced an array of high-quality content that captured the vibrant stories of Nigerians. Her work at JAAS Pictures helped shape the visual storytelling landscape, highlighting everyday people’s struggles and successes.

Before running her own media company, Sophia held various roles in leading Nigerian television networks such as Galaxy Television, HipTv, Royal Roots Television, PopCentral, and Folio Nigeria. Her expertise ranged from content development and scripting to directing and producing. She even took on a managerial role at the prestigious Miss Nigeria pageant, showcasing her versatility and leadership in the industry.
