The 9to5chick Top 100 Career Women in Nigeria list, celebrates inspiring mid and senior level female professionals in the corporate sector who are making significant contributions at work, leading by example, and disrupting the status quo.

The list is a deliberate compilation of female leadership, some of whom hitherto now, despite having various laudable, documented achievements, may not have been given the visibility commensurate to their significant career contributions.

 

These professionals, who are defying the odds, and driving business results despite COVID-19, were nominated by peers and colleagues, or put themselves forward.

 

Nominations were then reviewed by an independent judging panel comprising Yemi Faseun, Head, Human Resources, Globacom, Osayi Alile, CEO, Aspire Coronation Trust, and Funke Amobi, Country Head, Human Capital, Stanbic IBTC – who evaluated each person on the influence of their role, their impact, including giveback initiatives both within and outside their careers, documented thought leadership and career achievements.

 

The result: 100 female professionals in 20 industries who are advancing excellence and professionalism in Nigeria’s corporate sector.

Tope Akinsanya

Human Resources Director, West Africa, British American Tobacco

 

Tope is an experienced Human Resources professional with over 10 years HR consulting and management experience. She is currently the Human Resources Director at British American Tobacco, West Africa, where she provides strategic HR Leadership, Business Partnering, and Talent Management Solutions, covering over 22 countries across West Africa. Prior to this, Tope worked at top firms including KPMG, Stanbic IBTC, where she led HR Services.

 

Bunmi Adeniba

Marketing Director, Unilever Plc, Nigeria

 

Bunmi is an experienced Marketing Professional and Commercial Operator with cross functional experience in Brand Building, New Category Development, Innovation Management and Quality Management. She has hands-on general management experience in the end-to-end oversight function of a division. In 2020,she was appointed the Vice-President of the World Federation of Advertisers and is responsible for coordinating the Regional Network of Advertisers in Africa.

 

Patricia Obozuwa

Vice President, Government Affairs, Communications, Cocacola

 

As Head, External Relations, Nigeria and Corporate Communication Leader, Sub-Saharan Africa at Procter & Gamble (P&G), she pioneered the public relations function and built the West Africa communications team; as Chief Communications & Public Affairs Officer for General Electric Africa, notable among her achievements in the organisation is the creation of  ‘GE Lagos Garage’- a hub for advanced manufacturing skills development that has produced over 2,400 graduates; and as Arts and Sponsorship Manager for the British Council in Nigeria, she influenced and attracted attention to the Council. In December 2020, she was appointed Vice President, Public Affairs, Communications & Sustainability, Africa at The Coca-Cola Company. Throughout her career, Patricia has identified personal leadership as the cornerstone for success.

 

Mofoluwaso Ilevbare

Mofoluwaso Ilevbare is a Confidence Coach, Bestselling Author and a seasoned  HR Thought Leader with over 17 years industrial & organizational experience across Africa, Middle East, India, U.S. and Europe. Mofoluwaso is a member of the John Maxwell Team, a Cherie Blair Women & WIMBIZ Mentor, The Queen’s Young Leaders Advisory Mentor, Founder of two not-for-profit associations which champion initiatives for women and girls and founder of the Flourishing Forties, a networking platform where extraordinary leaders in their forties share ideas, collaborate, and thrive. ‘Fofo’ as she’s fondly called is a 6-time Amazon Best-selling Author, co-authoring six Amazon best-sellers, writing fourteen books of her own. Azukaego Chukwuelue is a Supply Chain Director in one of the leading global FMCG organisations. Over the course of her 20-year career which saw her work in Consumer goods and Pharmaceuticals, she has gained versatility and depth working across different fields, including Sales and Supply Chain. With competencies in revenue growth, international logistics, demand forecasting and supply network design, she is the go-to person for troubleshooting potential operational loopholes that span across forecasting and planning, customer relationship management, distributor management dynamics etc .

 

Azukaego Chukwuelue is passionate about gender inclusion in male-dominated fields and she achieves this through Truss empowerment Foundation. She’s a gender inclusion advocate and thought leader.

 

Esther Adegunle

Business Development Leader, DAI Nigeria

 

Esther is the Business Development Leader at DAI Nigeria. She leads local business development and works with other business development teams to win opportunities with donor organisations like DFID, USAID, WB and EU. As a multi-faceted lady, she manages her social enterprise Belle&Grace where she supports mums to be and new mothers during breastfeeding. Also, she founded an NGO – BeyondaDegree- which in the last 6 years has supported over 200 students/new graduates transit to life after school. Lastly, she is a storyteller, documenting her life journey on her blog – Chronicles of Grace – and recently published a book “Driving in Lagos”.

 

Chineze Amanfo

Amanfo who has come to be known in the perception industry as a conscientious and creative corporate communications professional, has extensive experience spanning over 15 years, commencing with a career at foremost PR agency, C&F Porter Novelli. The alumna of the University of Calabar’s experience cuts across proactive and reactive corporate and product communications as well as crisis management.  An accredited public relations practitioner and toastmaster, Chineze is actively involved in community organizations and activities aimed at advancing the public relations profession. She is passionate about capacity building, and in her spare time mentors at youth empowerment programs. Omotola Oyebanjo

Omotola Oyebanjo is the Head, Corporate Affairs and Communications for Africa, Upfield, the largest plant-based consumer goods company in the world.   She has accrued close to two decades of experience in Corporate, Development and Marketing Communications across FMCG, extractive, marketing and financial industries.

Omotola Oyebanjo is the immediate past Head of Corporate Communications at Lafarge Africa. She was the Head, Strategic Communications and Media at Union Bank of Nigeria; Communications Consultant at Aerialview Marketing Communications Africa and Head Corporate Communications at British Council. She also worked in a managerial capacity in the Internal Communications department at Unilever Nigeria.

As a Consultant she has managed accounts such as the Australian Trade Commission, International Breweries, Kia Motors, Haansbro Confectioneries, NISSAN Motors, United Kingdom Education Advisory Services, Edinburgh Napier University Scotland, BPP University and Sheffield Hallam University UK.  She is also involved in several empowerment programmes for women and young people in Nigeria.

 

Ugochi Akwiwu-Onyike

Ugochi Akwiwu is currently the Supervisor, Operations Performance Management in the Planning & Commercial Division of the NPDC, a subsidiary of the NNPC. A sought after thought leader, she was a speaker at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE),Benin section, and was also discussant at the 2020 virtual colloquium which dwelt on business growth, survival and improvement in the post covid-19 era.

Alero Balogun

Alero Balogun is the Head, Corporate Communications and CSR at Oando PLC. With over 15 years’ experience in marketing and communications, she joined Oando in 2013 as the Corporate Communications Manager, a role she held for 4 years before rising to her current position. She presently heads a team with the remit of driving positive brand perception both internally and externally via showcasing Oando as the most desirable company to work and invest in. She successfully managed the strategy development and execution of local and international campaigns for Oando’s N1.6bn acquisition of ConocoPhillips Nigeria in 2014. Rosario Osobase

Rosario Osobase is Commercial Manager for Tenaris Global Services in Nigeria. She has 14 years of experience spanning both technical and commercial roles in leading local and international companies including British American Tobacco, Schlumberger and Tenaris. While with Schlumberger Nigeria, Rosario started out as a Drilling Services Engineer working on major fields for the International Oil Companies operating in Nigeria. Following this phase, she took up various lead technical roles in deepwater drilling operations which culminated in the role of Sales engineer for one of Schlumberger’s Businesses in Nigeria. She later joined Tenaris Global Services, where she is responsible for executing commercial strategy in Nigeria. Rosario has a Bachelor degree of Computing University of Bradford (first class honours graduating with the overall best performance). She has also attended numerous local and overseas management training. She is the Executive Secretary of petroleum contractors trade section under LCCI, a fund raiser volunteer at Slum2school Africa and was a business mentor at the CIS Lagos.

 

Fabia Ogunmekan

Executive Director, Wiscar Nigeria

 

Fabia Ogunmekan has spent the last 18 years working in the fields of Law and Development and has worked in various capacities with non-profits in the Healthcare, Gender and Entrepreneurship sectors. She was the Executive Secretary of Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) an NGO that advocates for gender parity and empowerment of women through structured mentoring and role modeling for leadership programmes. Since her appointment as ES, Fabia has driven the visibility of the WISCAR brand and created new impressive channels of impact. In 2020, she was appointed as the Executive Director of WISCAR. She is also the Founding Trustee of Imara Foundation, a women’s philanthropic movement promoting women’s cause-based organizations.  She spent 8 successful years in different management and executive roles, culminating in her role as Head of Group Legal and Regulatory Compliance; the Tony Elumelu Foundation as Alumni Engagement Manager where she was responsible for engagement programs and collaborative partnership opportunities for the Alumni network. She has consulted and is a facilitator at the Lagos Business School’s Nonprofit Leadership and Management Programme. In her spare time she volunteers as a mentor.

 

Jane Onwuchekwa

Educator, Data Analyst, Coursera, Data Stuma LLC

Jane is a data-driven and insightful educator who is passionate about STEM, bridging the gender gap in STEM and redefining the educational sector. She is involved in mentoring and coaching girls from low-income backgrounds to become confident to face challenges irrespective of their environment. She achieves this by teaching them Robotics, Electronics, Mechanics, Science, Computer Programming, fundamentals of web design and computer programming to stimulate their interest in STEM fields. She also provides lessons in soft skills courses such as  Leadership and Entrepreneurship to ensure value based, ethical and transformed women who will become bold leaders and create jobs by solving problems.

Kemi Ogunsanya

Literacy Educator, Sunnydale School, Lagos

Kemi is an educator par excellence, a literacy educator at SunnyDale, Lagos. She has teaching experience across both public and private schools at primary and secondary levels.  Kemi has her first degree in English Education and her Masters Degree in Educational Planning and Administration. She is the convener of The Pristine Project, an initiative aimed towards the advocacy of menstrual health and hygiene for females as well as equipping girls in rural areas with entrepreneurial skills. She is also the convener of The Teachers Discourse Series, a platform born to equip teachers with relevant skills necessary to upscale their impact.

She facilitated the creative use of technological tools and platforms in facilitating learning for more than 100 students during the pandemic-induced lockdown. In 2020, she was involved in Advancing training in Teacher Education by reaching out to more than 1000 teachers via volunteering to facilitate at various physical and virtual platforms where she taught extensively on Quality Education strategies, 21st Century Educator Skills, Multiple Intelligences, amongst other pertinent topics.

She convened a menstrual hygiene campaign and a skill empowerment session for female teenagers in Ebute-Metta Lagos where the girls were educated on menstrual health practices, taught to produce basic hygiene products, and free sanitary wares were also distributed to them. She consistently leverages social media to share best practices, valuable experiences, and insights into the world of Education garnered on her role as a classroom teacher which can be inculcated by teachers seeking growth.

 

Dr Yemi Dawodu

Director, CLINA LANCET LABORATORIES NIGERIA

Yemi is a pathologist (Anatomic and Molecular) and CEO in a world class multinational ISO 15189 accredited laboratory in Nigeria. She has over 15 years recognised experience in the healthcare sector spanning clinical, research, senior management and administrative roles. She led her team in setting up a facility at Maitama which was unveiled as part of the company’s efforts to provide laboratory services of international standards with 100% accurate and reliable test results at all times.

Ezinne Okey-Uchendu

Assistant Director, National Agency For Control Of  AIDS(NACA)

Ezine is a health development expert with over 15years.  She currently works as a Chief Programme Officer with the Community Prevention and Care Services Directorate of The National Agency for the control of AIDS (NACA) Abuja, Nigeria where she leads the HIV and Drug Use component of the HIV response. She works in the area of building the capacity of stakeholders and local Non-governmental organizations to be sustainable service delivery implementers and change agents. She has a proven track record for improving the living conditions of Nigerians focusing on poor community members and building strong relationships between them and the donors. She is a recognised thought leader and international speaker who has presented papers at many international conferences, including the Pan-Africa Health Conference in Yaoundé Cameroon

Lara Yeku

Head, HR, Food Division at Flour Mills of Nigeria PLC

Lara is a global HR leader, a coach, and a strategist who has had a progressive career climb. She started her career at Cadbury Nigeria Plc. Thereafter, she moved to Human Capital  Development Consultants Ltd (HCDC), one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing HR Consulting firms and later joined DHL Excel Logistics as a Human Resource Officer. In 2008, Lara joined the HR team at Accenture and rose to the position of Country HR Lead for Accenture in Nigeria, where she served until March 31st, 2019. Lara cares about the professional growth of HR professionals, hence, she founded the HR GEMs Coach Network (Human Resources Great  Excellent Minds Coach Network) – a platform that offers a safe haven for HR professionals to thrive, learn, share and build life transformation skills.  She is also the author of a first of its kind, imaginative mentoring through storytelling concept book – My HR Storybook for HR professionals. Senami Johnson

Seun Runsewe

Vice President of growth, Softcom Limited

Seun Runsewe is the Vice President of Growth at Softcom, where she is leading efforts to deliver growth to Nigerian entrepreneurs through their digital bank, Eyowo. Prior to Softcom, she was the Director of Product at Opera-backed payments startup OPay. OPay has raised ~USD170m in funding in the last year and has over 300,000 agents in Nigeria — the largest agent network in the country — who process over $2 bn in monthly transactions.

Prior to OPay, she built and beta-launched Switch by Sterling Bank, a multi-currency digital bank with integrations to interest savings, health insurance products for the Nigerian middle class and Nigerians in the Diaspora to address multiple financial needs in one place, making her the youngest banking CEO in Africa at the time. Before building Switch, she was an early member and the Business Lead at Paystack, a Y-Combinator backed online payments company that got acquired by Stripe for $200m.

Seun started her career as a Management Consultant and the Project Coordinator for Project Africa, KPMG’s initiative to push the frontiers of Financial Services in Africa across banking, payments and financial risk management – where she built muscles around strategy and business planning.

 

In 2019, she was recognized by The Future Project as an honoree of #YTech100 for being one of the brightest and best Nigerian technocrats. She founded Biamo Maternity designs,a thoughtful mummy gear, born out of pain of  HG in pregnancy.

 

Engr Lola Masha

Executive Director, Babban Gona

 

Lola Masha is a Nigerian technology executive.  She is currently the Executive Director of Babban Gona, “an innovative Agricultural Franchise model founded to leverage the private sector to address Nigeria’s spiralling youth unemployment challenge.”  Lola started her career as a consultant at the Chicago office of McKinsey & Company, engaging with senior management across several industries. She moved on to a new role leading the corporate strategy team at one of Nigeria’s commercial banks. She later joined OLX Group, starting as Country Manager for Nigeria, and then adding SSA Product Lead to her portfolio  She was the director trust and safety at OLX and was responsible for driving all elements of OLX  in Nigeria, including Business Development, Product Localization, Marketing and other relevant functions. Prior to joining OLX, Lola spent four years at Google leading various Product Partnerships efforts across EMEA and Emerging Markets. Lola was one of the earliest Googlers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) when the technology company began its operations in the region. Lola shaped the regional strategy, executed on several core initiatives and led business development efforts with key SSA partners including telcos, original equipment manufacturers, digital content providers and local entrepreneurs. Lola holds a BSc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia (UVA) and a PhD. Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was elected as the President of the Graduate Student council.

PEARL UZOKWE,

Pearl Uzokwe is the Director for Governance and Sustainability at Sahara Group Limited. Pearl has had remarkable professional growth in the last fifteen years whilst building her legal career within UK and Nigerian corporate structures.  In 2002, she began working at the Crown Agents UK providing specialist and multidisciplinary services in institutional development, international trade & procurement and finance. Her role in the legal department of the organization, saw her partner frequently with the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in the development and administration of a number of notable funds including the Private Infrastructure Development Group – set up to facilitate private investment in the infrastructure needed to help alleviate poverty in developing countries and the International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIM) – a $4 billion investment facility designed to accelerate the availability of funds to be used for health and immunisation programs in 70 of the world’s poorest countries. She built a strong working relationship from amongst the donors which included country donors like the UK, French and South African governments and private NGOs like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation  Pearl’s vast professional experience within the upstream, downstream and midstream sectors of the oil and gas industry, corporate law and international development culminated in her appointment as the Group’s Director for Governance and Sustainability – a role which her professional pursuits and private passions seemed to have been leading up to in the period before hand.  She has been featured in several platforms for interviews and as a speaker.

 

Taiwo Dayo Abatan

Ojoma Ochai

She is Director Programmes British Council with overall responsibility for leading education and society (social justice, governance, inclusion etc.) programmes in Nigeria as well as overseeing arts programmes across West Africa. In the last fifteen years, Ojoma has worked in various creative economy development roles with organisations like British Council (2006 to date), World Bank (2014 to 2016), and since 2015 has been a member of the UNESCO expert panel on the 2005 Convention on Diversity of Cultural Expressions.  She is passionate about the advancement of creative and cultural expressions for shaping narratives and enhancing livelihood opportunities for sector practitioners in the global south (particularly Africa).

Dr Yemi Falajayo

Dr Yemi currently serves as the head of programs for the UN women Malawi country office. She brings to the fore over 19 years experience in leadership and management. Her country portfolio includes: Nigeria,Zambia, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa,Malawi and regional bodies such as the Southern African Development Community.

 

Omokehinde Adebanjo

SVP, Regional Franchise Lead (Middle East & Africa), Mastercard

Omokehinde Adebanjo is VP & Area Business Head For West Africa, Mastercard. In this role, she is responsible for advancing the acceptance and issuance of MasterCard’s payment products in Nigeria and other English-speaking countries in West Africa. She is committed to introducing the benefits of a cashless society to Nigeria and the region, and keen on implementing a vision of a world beyond cash, and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s goals to reduce the circulation of cash in the country’s economy. She started her career at Goldman Sachs International, initially as a Derivatives Trader. She was promoted and tasked with the responsibility of managing a portfolio of structured equity derivatives, as an Investment Analyst. She was named a Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Scholar and was a recipient of the Goldman Sachs and Institute of International Education’s Global Leaders Award.

 

Joana Nnazua Kolo

Joana Nnazua Kolo is a humanitarian and the youngest serving Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Kwara State. She is believed to be the youngest commissioner in the history of Nigeria. She is an advocate of good governance.

 

Teju Abisoye

Executive Secretary, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund

 

Teju Abisoye is a lawyer with extensive experience in development finance, project planning, execution, monitoring and evaluation of humanitarian projects, government interventions and investment opportunities. Prior to joining LSETF where she acts as the Acting Executive Secretary, she served as Director (Post Award Support) of YouWiN! where she was responsible for managing consultants nationwide to provide training, monitoring & evaluation for a minimum of 1,200 awardees annually. She has also managed the affairs of a Non-Government Organization based in Lagos State. Under her leadership, LSETF has created many innovative campaigns and solutions aimed at tackling unemployment in Lagos state, chief amongst this being the launch of the Lagos Economic Acceleration Programme (LSETF-LEAP)- a N5 Billion initiatives aimed at helping businesses in Lagos recover,  save and create more jobs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Odiri Oginni

Odiri Oginni is the CEO at United Capital Asset Management Limited. In this leadership role, she drives the strategic direction and operational performance of United Capital Asset Management, which manages over N250 billion in total assets, for both institutions and individual investors. Chinwe Egwim is a professional Economist, author, and gender inclusion advocate. She is an Amazon best selling author who has 500+ published economic notes geared towards macro, development and financial economics. She is currently the Senior Economist at FBNQuest Merchant Bank, an arm of FBN Holdings. She has notable practical experience in producing relevant economic research reports. Chinwe is an active member of the AfDB Annual Meetings. She sits on the board committee on research at the Nigeria Economic Summit Group. A Kano-born young lady, Saadat Aliyu has developed an android application ‘Helpio App’ for reporting cases of sexual abuse.

‘Helpio App’ was launched on August 6, 2020, on Playstore.

Ms Aliyu who is the founder of Shamrock Innovations, Women and Youth-Centric Tech Innovation Hub in Kano, said that any person can visit Playstore on an android phone and install the app.

“You can go to the Play store, search for it and install it. After Installation, you can sign up using email and password either in Hausa or English language,” she told Channels Television on Monday.

“So far the Initiative for Support of Victims of Sexual abuse, Orphans and Less privileged (ISSOL) and Equity Destitute, Child Right and Welfare initiative (EDCRAWI) have signed up in the platform.”

She recalled that she started learning IT skills from her brother when she was in junior secondary school and subsequently became a self-taught developer.

The young lady said her next project will be launched very soon and is fintech-oriented conceived to continue making an impact on women and people’s lives by advocating and developing solutions.

Sometimes, you meet people struggling with issues and you are lost for words to say or where to begin.

I once met someone who is struggling due to lack of friends, family, motivation, poor self-image and lack of confidence.

I feel for her because I know what it’s like to struggle, to feel down and even depressed, to have no motivation. I have suffered from confidence problems, many times.

So I’m writing this for her and every other humans who are struggling.

You are struggling, maybe even hurting. And that is really difficult. It can feel hopeless, lonely, confining.

These feelings are very real, and really hard. How do you climb out of this when you don’t have the motivation to change? How do you make friends who can help you if you don’t feel the self-esteem and confidence?

I am sorry you’re hurting and struggling. But know that even if you feel alone, you are not alone. I, for one, am connected to you because I’m thinking of you, all of you. I’m connected to you because I too have suffered in similar ways. We have shared pain, shared hopelessness, shared loneliness.

And it’s not just me: every single human being who is alive has felt this kind of pain, hopelessness, and loneliness at one time or another. We are all connected through this shared pain and struggle. We feel alone, and in this we are connected.

The feeling of being alone, separated from the rest of the world, is an illusion. Sure, it’s an illusion that feels very very real. But it’s not true.

Consider: you are supported by millions, even billions, of people. You are using electricity that is powered by an electric company, with thousands of employees working to give you that electricity. You drink water brought to you by yet more thousands of people. You eat food raised and harvested and brought to you by thousands of people. Brought to you on roads built and maintained by thousands of people, on vehicles (ships, trucks, cars, planes) built and run by thousands of people. You wear clothes, use gadgets, sit on furniture, all built and brought by thousands of people. And all those thousands and thousands of people are themselves supported similarly by thousands more.

You are supported by millions of people, and those millions are supported by millions. The entire world supports each other. We became the people we’ve become only because we’ve had that support, we’ve connected to share ideas, learn from each other, serve each other.

I believe this is a miracle. We each are supported by a miracle of connections to every other person on the planet. We feel alone, but it is only an illusion.

The way to rise from this struggle is to turn from your own pain to the pain of others. Who else around you is struggling? How can you offer them love? How can you help them, ease their pain in some way?

By turning outwards, toward the pain of others, we can fill our hearts with love for them, wanting nothing but happiness for them. Then, by this simple turning, we have hearts filled with love. I think that, too, is a miracle.

I can’t take away your pain, but I can offer you two miracles: the love that comes from turning toward other human beings, and the connection we have to everyone on Earth. I feel connected to you, and my heart is filled with love for you.

I hope this makes you feel better and I hope you find the strength and courage you need to go through life.

At the beginning of every month, it’s like a blank slate: the month can be whatever you want it to be.

This is freeing, exhilarating, magical.

Take advantage of it.

Of course, we always have the magic of a fresh start available to us — in any day, any hour, any moment. Every morning is a beautiful fresh start! In fact, right this moment, you have the opportunity of a fresh start.

We should take advantage of these opportunities to see the freshness of the moment in front of us.

Start at One — this is one of my mantras this year. You can make it yours, even as you begin a new month.

Let’s look at how to practice with this during each day, and a couple ways you can take advantage of Starting at One as we look at this beautiful year in front of us.

Practicing a Fresh Start in Each Day

Every morning, you get to ask yourself:

  • What would I like to do with this incredible day?
  • What would make today incredible for me?
  • What am I feeling called to do today? What’s most important?

You can wipe the slate clean of whatever happened the day before (no matter what it was), and just start anew.

And then you get a couple hours into it, and maybe you find yourself off course. You’ve gotten distracted, or caught up in busywork.

Start again.

Take a breath, and imagine this next moment is a blank slate. What is most important right now? What would you like to do with this incredible hour in front of you?

Start again. And find gratitude that you get to start again, over and over.

Practicing with the Blank Slate of the New Month

We’re about a couple of hours into the new month, and you might have already started to lose the freshness of this month. But we’re just starting out! We’re at the very beginning, and we can do whatever we like with this month.

  • What would make this an amazing month for you?
  • What is possible for you this month?
  • Who would you like to be?

Take a notebook and pen, and spend 30 minutes thinking about this fresh space, and writing out some notes.

Is this the month you finally write your book, launch something, create something? Grow your business to a new level, launch a new mission, help others in a big way? Tackle something hard and scary and meaningful?

Are there new habits you want to create?

This is your month, to use however you like. What magic can you create?

Putting It Into Action

Once you have an idea of what you’d like to do or create … it’s time to make it actually happen.

Write it down and commit to it. Tell others and promise to report to them weekly. Adjust your plan each week, with the blank slate of the new week. Do a review each week and get yourself back on track with each fresh week.

One small step at a time, make it happen. One fresh start at a time.

My full name is OGUNWALE Oluwabukola Victoria. Sometimes, I call myself

3. Is Law your dream course of study? If not, what prompted you to study Law?

Law was never my dream course. My dad encouraged me to study law and he insisted that all his children must study a professional course.

4. You’re the Chamber Governor for Acquitters Chamber, Bowen University and also the Head of Academic Committee, Diverse Law Organisation. How have you been able to handle both tasking roles effectively? And what influence did occupying both positions have on you as a Law student?

First of all I don’t bite more than I can chew. I don’t take up a responsibility when I know that I wouldn’t be able to deliver appropriately and give it my best.
However, God has been the major helping factor.

Then I’ve also built multitasking skills. Overtime by being responsible for different things both at home and in school. I’ve also learnt the importance of setting priorities and being disciplined and these has helped alot in striking a balance.

What is the significance of the EndSars Campaign to you as a Nigerian Youth

The significance of the campaign to me as a young Nigerian youth is that People, old or young have a right to life and such right shouldn’t be taken away from them in any unlawful manner. Also, the Youths have a voice in influencing Government’s decisions, regulations and policies.

However, it’s very unfortunate that the Government doesn’t lend an ear to our voices and that proves the fact that alot of things are wrong about today’s government.

7. What has been your greatest challenge so far as a beauty preneur and what other challenges do you feel other young Nigerians in your niche encounter as well?

Well…the greatest challenge for me is inadequate finance and lack of parental support.
Another challenge is academic demands.Its important to be consistent in business and it’s also necessary to maintain good grades. This takes a lot of extra efforts to scale through.

8. What are the possible solutions to the challenges raised in question seven?

1. Acknowledge who you are and who God has purposed you to be.
2. Know that you have your life to live and you owe yourself a lot of hard-work to secure a great future.
3. Take savings and investments seriously, it’s helps alot in future endeavours.
4. Trust God with all your heart and always remember that he has your back.
5. Recognise and appreciate the people who support your dreams and goals and also leverage on them till your dreams come true. Then, if the people who don’t support you later acknowledge their wrong then so be it and if they don’t, keep pushing until you make it. There’s no Limit to greatness; just spread your wings and fly.

10. If you were the President of Nigeria for a day, what would you change?

If I’m to be the President of Nigeria for a day, I’ll change the system of Electricity supply. I know how important that is to my fellow Nigerians.

14) If you were given the opportunity to address a group of girls five years younger than you, what will be your advice to them?

Try to develop a high self esteem right from now and it’s not too early to start having dreams and aspirations and to start pursuing them; because any opportunity that doesn’t meet preparation will turn out to be a failure.

You may have recently come across the story of Shaina Bell, the 24-year old mother of three who was arrested in Liberty Township, Ohio, and charged with two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment after she left two of her children alone in a motel room while she worked her job at Little Caesars.

This was one of those stories where it behooves compassionate people to steer clear of social media comment sections regarding Bell’s situation unless they want to bear witness to the dumpster fire of misogynoir and poverty-shaming that happened on a lot of threads. Fortunately, this story has a happier ending than many like it as people who are naturally empathetic to the struggles of a fellow human being were able and willing to say “I’m here for you” with their wallets.

NBC 10 reports that a GoFundMe page set up by Bell to help her find permanent housing and other financial support—with a goal of raising only $5,000—has raised more than $150,000 in funds.

From NBC:

Her top donations include Music label co-founder, Pierre “Pee” Thomas donating $10,000 and a Cleveland Cavalier, Javale Mcgee, donating $5,000 dollars.

Thomas wrote on Instagram, “My mom used to have to do the same thing when we were young, not cause of abandonment issues, it’s because people can’t afford child care working at a pizza shop. She wasn’t hanging out at a club. She was at work.”

Bell’s story also hit the political sphere. An Arizona Congressman Ruben Gallego tweeted, “Women are dammed if they do or damned if they don’t. Stay at home with your kids and receive government assistance and you are a leach, go to work for poverty wages and can’t get consistent sitters and go to jail.”

In an interview with WKBN 27, Bell—whose children are age nine, seven and three—said simply that she “had to go to work.”

“My daughter decided that she wanted to stay here,” she said. “My daughter told me that this is where she wants to be, and I felt that she was old enough to be able to stay here with her sister for a few hours because my job is right down the street.”

At the time of her arrest, Bell told police officers that she usually has someone check on her children whenever she needs to leave them while she works.

Listen: People are going to think what they will about a young mother leaving her children home alone, but no one does this for shits and giggles. Any questions about whether or not this woman is a capable mother who loves her children are questions that miss the mark by miles in addressing what’s really going on here: Poverty makes you choose between being with your children at all times and working to keep them fed cared for.

“My kids bring me joy. They make me laugh. They’re my world,” Bell told WKBN. “I would never do anything to harm my kids. My kids are everything to me. That’s all I do is go to work and take care of my kids. That’s all I do.”

Of course, the holier than thou will beat their chests and exclaim that “no one is to blame for her situation but her”—which in and of itself is assuming a lot as none of us knows this woman’s life—but she doesn’t seek to blame anyone so the point is moot.

“I never set blame on anybody for anything because, at the end of the day, nobody left my kids in the hotel but me,” she said. “I’ve cried a couple of times since this situation started. I’m just trying to keep a level head and trying to stay strong because that’s all I can do.”

Bell appears to be taking the attention her story has gotten her in stride and allowing the outpouring of support to outshine the comments of projecting-ass haters who live to condemn strangers.

“A lot of people are saying hurtful things, but a lot of people are also being there for me and showing great support,” she said. “I have over $100,000 in a GoFundMe account right now. I didn’t ask for that, but people gave it to me, and I’m just over appreciative to what’s going on.”

The AWP Network Initiative has unveiled Patience Salifu of CondimentPlus, Ogola Lois Kange of Smiley’z Mobile Kitchen, Olufunmilola Shelika of Gef’s Smoked Edibles, Ebun Feludu of JAM – The Coconut Food Company, Chigozie Bashua of The Nutplace Ventures, Patrick Karunwi of Kalos Agro Homes, Boma Whyte of Kringle Cookies, and Chidimma Uzoma-Mba of Zayith Yogurt as selected vendors to supply ShopRite Nigeria.

The competitive AWP Network Vendor programme, which launced last year on July 15, 2020, received over 2,500 vendor applications. Only 100 vendors were accepted into the programme, while 61 vendors were certified to complete the programme and received the opportunity to pitch their products to ShopRite Nigeria. The programme in collaboration with ShopRite provides a real life opportunity for women entrepreneurs in Nigeria to get their products out into the marketplace.

The AWP Network Vendor programme will continue to work with small business owners who are interested in operating as suppliers, by working to recruit additional retailers as partners. The AWP Network also plans to invest more in food manufacturing and innovative programs.

Dr. Gbonjubola Abiri is a Consultant Psychiatrist, Managerial Psychologist, Professional Speaker and the Medical Director of Tranquil and Quest Behavioral health, Lagos. She is co-author of the book Mental Health in the Workplace. A Fellow of the West Africa College of Physicians (WACP), member of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA), she has received trainings from the King’s College London, the University of Washington and the prestigious Harvard University, Boston USA. Passionate about research in child and adolescent forensic, women’s mental health, and occupational mental health, Abiri is driven by the holistic view to health. She also uses her knowledge in Psychiatry and Psychology to influence and maximize effectiveness and productivity in the workplace via the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). A Director of Women’s Mental Health at the ASIDO Foundation, she currently volunteers with the Lagos State COVID-19 Psychosocial Response Team in the fight against the pandemic. She also works with the THR media, as a Consultant Psychiatrist, as well as Sexual and Gender Based Violence Advocate. In this interview with IJEOMA THOMAS-ODIA, she shares her drive for mental health and advocacy.

What endeared you to psychiatry?
The vulnerability of the young was the first source of fascination that spurred my interest in Psychiatry. As a child, I had suffered from Asthma; I had many attacks resulting from my frailty as a child and my inability to properly care for myself.

When I presented to Doctors, they barely had the patience to allow me express my symptoms or how exactly I felt. I was challenged to bridge that divide by becoming a ‘listening Doctor.’ I also noticed that as I grew older, people found it comfortable to speak and discuss with me concerning the issues that bothered them. They often expressed their relief after having such conversations.

You currently champion the cause of mental health, what led to this passion?
My passion for mental health was inspired by the need to fill the gap of lack of care for mentally ill persons. Mental health is clearly not given the attention that it deserves, in spite of the associated mortality, morbidity and reduced quality of life. The general perception, attitudes, language and behaviour towards persons with mental health conditions are often those of shame, stigma and discrimination. These attitudes impact negatively on the patient’s perception of themselves and their help-seeking behaviour.

Mental health is extremely important as it has impact on all aspects of our health; our ability to engage in productive activities, cope with the normal stresses of life, contribute our quota to the environment we live in and engage in thriving relationships. We all have a role to play in ensuring mental health for all.

How would you describe your journey so far?
My journey has been a beautifully challenging and rewarding one. My father, who is a Medical Doctor himself, inspired me early enough in life to toe the path of saving lives. In medical school, I took an elective course in 500 Level in Psychiatry at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. It was not commonplace at the time to leave school to go for such a course, but I insisted on having that exposure.

While there, I met one of my greatest influences in person of Prof Olayinka Omigbodun. Working with patients has been extremely rewarding as lives are impacted. My work ensures that patients live their best lives in spite of their illnesses. My work has ensured that mental health is spotlighted, and that mental health conversations are normalised. It has ensured that suicides are prevented; mental illnesses are well managed, and that parental, familial and marital relationships are restored. It has indeed been so fulfilling seeing this turn around. The success stories make the journey worthwhile and fulfilling; this of course makes me want to do more.

Could you share with us some of your activities in your cause for stable mental health?
I am involved and engaged in creating mental health awareness, advocacy and education via my social media platforms and on various print and electronic media. I make use of cartoons, animations and illustrations in indigenous languages to discuss pertinent mental health issues.

In May last year, which is the Mental Health month, I embarked on a 31-for-31 day campaign where distinguished personalities across different walks of life discussed mental health issues in order to enlighten others based on their experiences and expertise. I utilise my expertise and serve as member of the advisory council of Joy Inc, Director of Women’s Mental Health at Asido Foundation and co-founder of the THR media, which focuses on survivors of Sexual and Gender Based violence. I also give mental health talks to a diverse population including children, adolescents, women, men, religious and cooperate organisations on mental health and wellbeing. I currently run a social media series called the ‘#waitaminutewithDrG’ where I deliver pertinent mental health tips in a minute. I also serve as Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director at Tranquil and Quest Behavioral Health, a premier mental health and substance abuse facility.

In your years of practice, what do you consider issues women face that affect their mental health?
Quite a number of factors impact on women and their mental health causing pressures. Some of these include women’s multiple roles, personal and societal expectations regarding marriage, childbirth, parenting and career, exposure to trauma in childhood, domestic violence, body image issues, issues of self-esteem, self perception and self doubt as well as severe life events that cause a sense of loss, inferiority and humiliation. These factors increase the risk of mental health problems such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, sleep, eating and sexual problems, psychosis, personality disorders as well as substance use disorders.

What is your view about the appreciation of psychiatry in Nigeria especially as it relates to mental health and mental illness?
Mental health and mental health conditions are not given the attention they deserve as they are looked at largely through the lens of religion and culture, which have continued to cloud our judgment with ignorance, stigma and discrimination. In Nigeria and even in 2021, individuals are unlikely to visit healthcare professionals for care at the first instance of a mental illness. Instead, they would visit religious organisations, as the belief is that mental illnesses are as a result of spiritual attacks.

Science has however dispelled most of these myths and misconceptions, as there is more awareness and understanding of the pathophysiology of mental health conditions with causation being linked to biological, psychological and social sources. This is why I have continued to engage in enlightenment, as it is necessary to dispel the myths surrounding mental health and mental health care, as well as change the health seeking behaviour.

Share with us your activities as a volunteer with the Lagos state COVID-19 psychosocial response team?
I have always enjoyed volunteering for causes I am passionate about. It’s such as altruistic act and a way to give back. I have always been motivated by John Bunyan’s saying that ‘you have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you’ and so when the call to volunteer for the COVID-19 psychosocial team came, I heeded it.

Our work in the psychosocial team was largely to provide emotional and psychological support via the telephone for patients from the point of testing positive, to isolating at home or being treated at the hospital, to when they were discharged and continued to need psychological support. We also provided psychological support and training to frontline healthcare workers who were in charge of the patients.

What is your advice to women trying to find a balance in their lives?
Harmony is the new balance. Trying to put too much effort into ‘balancing’ their lives such that work, career, managing relationships and other interests and hobbies get equal parts is not realistic. While work-life balance sees work and life as equally distinct parts, that co-exist and thrive separately, work-life harmony encourages that you look at all areas as part of a whole. It also encourages that you work at synergising all the parts.

It is important for women to identify the areas of their lives and find what work-life harmony means to them personally. Don’t be pressured by other women who seem to have it all together. Be encouraged by them, but not feel inadequate Just ensure that you are a continuous work in progress and that you also make efforts to outsource and ask for help when needed.

How do you balance family and career fronts?
Creating a harmony between family and career, especially in a field that is highly demanding, and lacking in professionals can be indeed tough. The occurrence of the COVID-19 increased rates of mental health conditions and domestic violence. It also led to an increment in virtual meetings, and working from home (WFH) creating a work-hour blur.

Interestingly, my work didn’t reduce and so while everyone was at home during the quarantine period, my team and I worked everyday to ensure our patients got the best care. We also had the added work of doing online sessions. This of course had its effects on personal and family life.

It takes a deliberate decision, effort and action to ensure that I am able to spend time engaging in fun activities and creating memories with my family. There is a lot of dedication to ensure that they also get quality time and attention from me. Learning to outsource certain duties and not feeling like I am superwoman and have to do everything also helps. Plus I carry my family along with my work and decisions as this ensures they are in the loop about my decisions. And of course, sometimes, I shut out the world, by turning off my devices so that I can be mindful and enjoy the seemingly little things and the joy they bring.
