The 24-year-old scored the goal after receiving a long pass in the 75th minute. She had dribbled past a defender and the goalkeeper, slipping the ball into the net from a really tight angle. She made the shortlist alongside nine other nominees.

Nigerian football player, Asisat Oshoala who plays for Barcelona FC, has scored a goal in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final on Saturday, becoming the first African ever to score in the final of the competition.

The 24-year-old came on in the 87th minute of the game, when her team was suffering a 4-0 loss to Lyon. She put a smile on the faces of the fans by scoring just two minutes after entering the pitch, delivering the only goal for her team.

Although her efforts weren’t enough to win her side the trophy, that goal made her the first Barcelona player to score in the Women’s Champions League final. Even without that goal, she had already made history as the first Nigerian to play in the final.

Asisat Oshoala has helped her club FC Barcelona Women, beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in yesterday’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final game and, in the process, became the first Nigerian to qualify for the competition’s final.

According to Goal, the match led to a lot of firsts for FC Barcelona Women. Not only did the club witness a record number of spectators for a women’s home game, but they also became the first Spanish club to reach the final in the history of the tournament.

For the past three months now, Oshoala has helped the club dominate. The 24-year-old has played six league goals so far this season, and she has sealed them all with seven goals. Oshoala’s magic will certainly come in handy on May 18, when the club faces Lyon in the final.
