Kenyan marathon runner Brigid Jepscheschir Kosgei has just broken the historic world marathon record set in London in 2003 by British runner Paula Radcliffe. Kosgei broke the 2:15:25 record by a minute and 21 seconds, finishing at 2:14:04.
Kosgei recorded the impressive time in the Chicago Marathon, just several months after her win in the 2019 London Marathon when she became the youngest woman ever to win the event at age 25.
Radcliffe’s 2003 record was the longest-standing world marathon record held by either men or women in the post-war era.
Kosgei’s record joins a long list of Kenyan titles in the sport. The news comes after Eliud Kipchoge, also a Kenyan marathon runner, became the first human to run a marathon in under 2 hours this past Saturday.
Kosgei’s previous records include a course-record time of 1:04.28 at the 2019 Great North Run, 23 seconds faster than the previous half marathon world record set by Joyciline Jepkosgei, and beating the course record by over 5 minutes at the Honolulu Marathon in 2017. She has 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal from the Chicago Marathon (gold in 2019 and 2018, silver in 2017) and a gold and a silver in the London Marathon (gold in 2019 and silver in 2018).
