Media personality, Toke Makinwa has opened up on her recent surgery and the challenges she has faced in past months of this year and how she has managed to overcome, in an honest post.

Talking about how this year has been for her, she wrote:

“Long and honest post alert***
I like to think I’m strong, I like to think my mind is positive and I’m out here focused on me, building to have a better life than I’ve had and just trying to leave this world a better place. Watching this clip broke me because this has been my state of mind this year.

The devil targeted my mind. He tried to make me lose my mind!!!! Somehow strong TM started to live in a lot fear and doubt and the fear quickly turned to depression. I could sell out my bags or kill it at a stage play or smash another milestone in my career and be so happy today and wake up sad the next.

The devil started planting words of uncertainty in my heart and I started to drift. I started to feel unworthy and it was a strange feeling I had a very important procedure and I didn’t tell anyone simply because a part of me wanted out from it.

(Can you believe the cheek), last week I went into surgery and as the doctors did their thing, Jesus did his. He was there to lift all the unnecessary burden and give me a new heart and as I woke up I felt different. I felt chosen, I felt like I went thru a re-birth and I share this because someone out there is struggling too…..

Speaking about completing Half of a Yellow Sun in her little studio apartment, Adichie said:

“It was so emotionally draining. I cried… Days would pass and I wouldn’t shower. I wouldn’t pick up my phone.”

According to her, Half of a Yellow Sun was the book she felt her “ancestors wanted [her] to write”. So, after she had completed it, she felt free to loosen up as a writer; a decision she thought her third book, Americanah, would suffer for.

About her state of mind while writing Americanah, Adichie continued:

“I was no longer feeling this sense of being the dutiful daughter of literature and that I wanted to follow the rules. You know what? I felt I had earned the right to write a terrible book.”

Well, she didn’t end up writing that terrible book she expected — instead, she created her most successful work yet, which she describes as her “fuck you” book. You can read a little excerpt from the interview, which is set to drop on April 19, right here.

Patriarchy has been the ruling system for as long as life has existed, and this means social power is given to the men of the community.

Unfortunately for men and perpetuators of patriarchy, women are not having any more of this such as the group of women in Kenya who in the bid to reject patriarchy, formed Umoja, a women’s only village.

(Photo: Christophe Calais/Corbis via Getty Images)

Umoja was founded in 1990 by Rebecca Lolosoli after being assaulted by her husband and other the men in her village, Samburu. She was beaten and battered for speaking out and demanding justice when British soldiers raped other women in the village. Knowing that the world would be a better place without men, Lolosoli escaped and founded a village with a group of 15 other women.

The name “Umoja” is Swahili for “united”, and the principal aim of the village is to provide a safe haven for women who are trying to escape sexual violence or female genital mutilation. Their primary source of income is the sale of jewellery, which is a business the women have managed to maintain despite frequent ambushes from men in nearby villages. Some of the men attack them for personal reasons, while others just don’t want women to have nice things without them.

The women of Umoja have since inspired several other villages, Nachami and Supalake, however things aren’t quite as cutthroat in these places. In Nachami there are men allowed in, but only if they reject traditional patriarchy, while in Supalake, men and women co exist, however the women have overriding power in the running the village. You go girls!!!

To everyone who is of the opinion that feminism is ‘not African’ and it’s something we’ve learnt from the western world: you should stop giving white people so much credit because these rural women are the definition of feminism!

It’s wonderful news for Chidiogo Akunyili, daughter of the Late Dora Akunyili, as she gets married to her love, Andrew.

The writer wrote a post on Instagram describing how her relationship with her new hubby has been, writing how blessed she is to have him. She described how she had written down the type of man she wanted and sure enough, 7 months later he appeared.

Read excerpts:

“Celebrating our civil union. Excited for all the white & colourful celebrations with friends and family to come. Thank you Andrew for being a daily reminder of the miracles that exist in this world and the power we have to tap into it.

On a cold February evening in Geneva, I wrote down words that I feel connected our destinies & led our paths to cross 7 months later in the deserts of Nevada. “Monday, 8 Feb 2016. Geneva – Clayton asked that I do a true exercise of what I want. Here goes. I seek a partnership with a strong man, mind, body and spirit. I seek a partnership with a man who will cherish, love and honour me & the life we build together, supporting each other through the journey with kindness, love, a smile & words that put difficulties in perspective. He will not be away from home all the time but have a career that allows for him to assist strongly and sometimes wholly in building a home for us and for the children. He will be conscious and inspire us to grow in consciousness. He will be full of kindness and have a depth of love that leaves us inspired by what two people can achieve together. He will hold me and we will give gratitude. He will be flexible. He is adventurous/open to new experiences. He is happy in himself & together we share happiness in God and Love.”

7 months later after strong guidance came to me to go to Burning Man — I met him. It was a story of the union of souls. I felt I had written him to existence and rejoiced in the connection we shared. One I know started with a decision to focus on the wholeness of my own soul — self love — & from the space of taking time for self I was ready to take time for another’s soul and him mine in turn. I was not looking for a man so save me but a man to hold me up in my own strength. Together we continue to weave a web of care, love, strength, that isn’t without its difficulties but I’m learning & growing with & from them.

I say yes to a life spent together in partnership — to holding each other up outwardly and on the inside — to loving every part of ourselves and each other knowing we have the power to create and re-create from a place of peace with what is & the infinity that can be.”

Here Is the post.
