Yemi Alade exhibits amazing dexterity, vocal power, emotional precision, and smooth transitions on her fourth studio album “Woman of Steel”.

She experiments successfully with a Latino vibe in “Give Dem”, while Afrobeat numbers like “Vibe”, “Nobody” and highlife gems like “Yeba”, the provocative Duncan Mighty duet “Shake” give the album that unapologetic African tone expected from the renowned Mama Africa. “Steel” boasts a modern remake of Angélique Kidjo‘s classic “Wombo Lombo” christened “Shekere”, with the iconic multiple Grammy Award winner.

In “Home”, Yemi promises to follow her love interest to the ends of the world. She sings about unrequited love on “Nobody”, assuring her love interest that no one will love him the way she does. She dives deep into the African-highlife with Nollywood mega-star, Funke Akindele on “Poverty”, rejecting the “disease” while also stressing that she is working really hard to be the richest possible version of herself while proclaiming prosperity and good health. In true Yemi Alade fashion, she also includes a Swahili version of “Poverty”.

“Woman of Steel” is Alade’s fourth studio album following “Black Magic”, “Mama Africa”, and “King of Queens”.

If you constantly have skin problems, then you will need to feed your skin a lot from inside out. Some people use home remedies and products and get results fast, while you have tried virtually everything and it seems like nothing is working.

The difference between you and these people may be that they have good skin but lack of care, attention, an adverse reaction or some other factors gave them skin issues

If you do not fall in the category of these ‘lucky’ ones, it means you need to do extra work to get clear, healthy skin.

Today, we will be looking at an important aspect of skincare that could be a game changer for you.

Do not bath with ordinary water, make sure that there are herbs in your water more often than not

My favourite herbs for bathing include;

• Lemon grass
• Neem leaves
• Guava leaves
• Zobo leaves
• Rice water (parboiled or fermented)

Get your leaves, sort them to ensure that you are using very healthy leaves, rinse and then put in a pot and cover with enough water, bring to a boil and sieve out the water, add a few cups of this herbal water to your bath water.

Usually, I would advise that you discard the remaining herbal water but if you have a refrigerator, keep for at most, 3 days

If you keep using any of these herbs to take your bath once daily, gradually, your skin will become what you have always wished it to be
Do you bath with herbs? Are they working for you? Kindly share with us

The Enemy Within!
‘Hello Debbie, I am here to talk to you about my frustrations, all my customers are leaving, they want to be white and if I can’t give that to them, they will go elsewhere’

I see this every day. To some, I reply with a bible verse, to some, I give soothing words, to some, I shake them up to be strong and to some, I am too weak to respond.

To a large extent, we are the enemy we desperately seek to destroy because we are actively participating in self destruction. By us, I mean everybody, the society, you, me and anyone who is a stake holder in the skincare industry.

Is it the lady who decides to take skincare advice from a crowd that is untrained or the ‘professional’ who goes to a store, buys a hydroquinone and steroid based cream, mixes with different kinds of potions, adds a little bleaching liquid and a dash of hair relaxer. Mixes this and turns into a plain container and goes ahead to list its ingredients as neem, orange, mango and coconut oil

Or the woman who keeps troubling another to help make her baby white at all cost.

Is it the man who starts to threaten his woman with side comments, asking her why she is getting dark when she knows fully well that he is attracted to fair skinned ladies or the man at the bank who beckons to this lady to jump the queue and be attended to just because she happens to be the fairest of them all.

What about the people who are asking you to boycott store bought cosmetics while selling the same cosmetics to you but this time with deadly additives.

Enemies everywhere, yet you cannot blame anyone because when you attempt to point a finger, the other four are screaming your name.

Who are we then to blame?

Again, nobody is to blame. I try my bit and I hope you do same

So far, I have been able to get my tribe to the place where they no longer ask me questions like; “will this darken me? Hope it won’t make me dark?” They have understood that when I am treating the skin, I do not see colour, I see skin conditions that needs to be corrected.
All that my heart beats for is to get everybody to the place of compliments, where nobody sees the colour of your skin because they are spell bound by the glow your skin exudes

That is what people know about me, this is what they say about me, and this is what they attach to my name
As I drop my pen in a few moments, I want to establish the fact that you can make a difference in this fight. You can take a stand and you can shine your own light. You may find yourself in an environment where anything goes but your light can still make a difference

No bashing, no blames, no calling out, no hate, just make a difference and watch what happens.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Debbie Ibiyemi, I am a skin business coach who works with people to help them get great skin and also shows then how to make money from it.

In the past one and a half years, I have been able to work with over 10,000 members of my Facebook community as well reached out to other communities as well.

The movie is centered around Dare William (Timini Egbuson), a privileged young man with a temper and his encounter with Abigail Kuforiji (Toyin Abraham), a pregnant woman with a secret. When both characters get stuck in a faulty elevator, Abigail is forced into an emergency labour, leaving Dare with no choice but to deliver the baby himself.

Fun Fact: Toyin Abraham was actually 7 months pregnant while shooting this movie so the pregnancy is very real.

Producer Niyi Akinmolayan shared a sweet stoory surrounding this. He says:

This woman @toyin_abraham is one of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life. We knew we wanted her for the #elevatorbaby role but I wasn’t even sure she would be available and be willing to work with a new young director. But I liked her previous stuff so I reached out and shared the idea. Now This was the fun part. She called me immediately and said…uncle Niyi…who told you. I said who told me what…she said don’t lie who told you. I thought maybe I had messed things up. And started apologizing. Next she said…wait…so you don’t know I’m actually about 7 months pregnant. I was silent for a while. Didn’t know what to say. Eventually i said..wow…oh wow. This could go either ways. We can go with the flow or she can totally turn us down. I didn’t know what to say. Next thing she said was. “This is how the Lord works 🤣🤣🤣 I will do it”. I was both scared and excited so I promised we would keep it a big secret and only post the teaser after she had announced her baby. We got a nurse and a standby vehicle on set throughout and her husband @kolawoleajeyemi was so fantastic in helping her during the film (great guy). Toyin was such a delight to work with. She gave everything to make the pregnant character work. And when I mean everything I mean slams, falls and all. We were the ones worried even @_timini was concerned. She on the other hand was just having fun. Strong woman. She’s definitely on my top list of actors to always work with. Congratulations once again Toyin from the Elevatorbaby crew. Our baby is finally here.

“If I got one naira for every time I heard ‘my child is picky and won’t eat,’ I would be retired before 35,” says clinical nutritionist, Ifeyinwa Omesiete. It is so common, yet each parent thinks their child is worse off than the next. Picky eating is when a child is selective about what they want to eat and 90 per cent of children born in the 21st century are picky about what goes into their mouths.

The Bachelor of Science holder in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Minnesota and a certificate in Child Psychology from CAPA International Education, England, identified types of picky eating.

Birth – Whether it is breastfed or formula-fed; the child is selective about how much they will eat, when they will eat and what vehicle they prefer (bottle or breast). This kind of picky eater isn’t very common, but if this is observed in a child as early as one month, the parents need to take extra steps in correcting it before the child establishes a habit.

Six months – At this age it is recommended that solids are introduced. Now dependent on the taste, exposure of nutrients and environmental factors, a child can become picky about food. Omesiete noted that there are four major factors that can cause immediate and intentional rejection of meals. They are:

Taste: If a child before six months is breastfed and the mother’s diet was heavily based on processed foods, carbs and lacks variety; the child’s palette can be poorly developed. This can lead to rejection of foods that have an unfamiliar taste. If the child was given only formula, the child is also more likely to reject solids because their palette is built on the contents of the formula they are used to.

Delayed weaning: If a child’s diet is solely on breastmilk beyond seven months, issues like separation anxiety can set in, especially if the child spends a lot of time with their mother. This prevents the child from accepting foods easily, just because it’s doesn’t taste like what they are used to.

Traumatic experience : Illnesses, change in location, frequent change of hands that care for the child, postpartum depression, absence of mother or lack of bonding between child and mother can cause a child to reject food or become selective about meals they chose to eat.
Nutrition deficiency: This is determined mostly through blood tests. A child who is deficient in vitamin B 12, zinc, iron or magnesium will have loss of appetite which presents as picky eating. It is important that you heck with a pediatrician or nutritionist who can prescribe plant-based supplements that would increase the levels of these vitamins and minerals.

Omesiete who is passionate about paediatric nutrition and alleviating malnutrition in Africa, consults for Carib Health Limited in Lagos where she creates recipes that foster healing and development. She stressed that early identification of picky eating can be curbed with the following steps:

. Quality vs. quantity: In Nigeria, most children are fed at least three times a day and offered a snack. This is perfectly fine but some children prefer eating smaller meals more frequently. The most important thing to note is feeding foods that are nutrient dense each time. This will automatically induce weight gain, reduce waste and make a child more excited about meal time.

. Understanding the child’s preferences: Most times children are able to show you better than they can tell you. For example, a child may prefer foods that are savoury vs sweet. This automatically eliminates many cereals and even foods like cheese milk and sweet potatoes. If a parent is able to identify this, they can offer foods that are always savoury so the child eats more often.

. Consult with a Nutritionist: Speak with a nutritionist who can help determine whether it is a nutrient deficiency or a phase. A nutritionist would provide a meal plan that is nutrient dense and offers a variety as well as monitor clinically the progress the child makes developmentally.

. Be consistent and persistent: Research has shown that it takes 15 non-consecutive times before a child fully accepts unfamiliar tastes and foods. So giving a child beans twice and concluding that they don’t like it does not make the child picky. Parents should keep trying to offer the foods as often as possible in different forms till the child accepts it.

. Be creative: Children are curious and love diverse colours, shapes, and tastes. Making meals in different shapes or forms will encourage a child to try the meal even if it is something they don’t like. For example, a child who doesn’t like oats as porridge may love oats as swallow because they enjoy different soups.

Omesiete, who birthed the first Pediatric Nutrition Challenge in Nigeria that educates mothers on the importance of proper nutrition, concluded that picky eating can be frustrating but with proper knowledge it can become a thing of the past.

Different circumstances may force you to eat late at night. Some of these circumstances may have been completely out of your control or firmly within. However, there are Nigerian foods to avoid at night. Sometimes, even though you have eaten before bedtime you may later be jolted awake by sharp pangs of hunger after a few minutes of tossing and turning.

After a long day at work, you possibly would get home and sleep off immediately. However, hunger pangs could wake you up at night. While looking for something to eat, these Nigerian foods are not a good choice.

Maybe, you were too busy during the early hours of the night and when sleep finally swooped in you succumbed and went to bed hungry. Only to have to wake up later to eat. Or perhaps you’re expecting to fast the following day and your brilliant idea is to eat a lot at midnight to compensate for tomorrow’s deficit. Whatever the case these things happen. Eating late at night in and of itself is not as damaging as it has been made out to be. If you have to, there are Nigerian food to avoid at night.

Bread

One of the easiest things to pick up in Nigeria is bread. Hardly has bread ever been scarce. It is hawked in traffic, in buses, and almost every shop in residential areas. This availability has made bread a kind of constant in most homes. So it is easy for it to be the first thing you reach out for when hunger calls late at night. And with tea and a spread of butter or mayonnaise, it begins to look like just what the doctor ordered. But it is not. Bread contains enough carbohydrate and sugar to up your blood sugar levels. This might mess with your energy levels, upsetting your sleep in the process.

 Fried Food

There’s a widespread conception that fries are light foods. Against the backdrop of this knowledge, it is natural for one to readily indulge in fries when they find themselves fighting late-night hunger. Popular Nigerian fries are yam, plantain, and potatoes. But the fact that they are fried makes them oily food. This makes them a bit difficult for the stomach to quickly digest. And indigestion leads to cramps, bloating, and heartburn, affecting your sleep.

Pepper soup is a popular Nigerian dish. It is mostly meat or fish steeped in a very spicy broth. It is mostly served as an after a meal. Therefore, it is perceived by many to be a light meal. But the preparation of pepper soup is fraught with pepper as the name implies and spices. These spices contain a chemical that can disrupt your stomach metabolism.

Ewa agoyin

For its tastiness, this is a favorite for many. It is simply beans cooked together in Palm oil sauce. Other condiments are added to achieve a spicy flavor and taste. But the fact that you have a leftover of it somewhere in the fridge doesn’t mean it’s made for a good late-night meal. Ewa agoyin can easily give you heartburn, or an upset stomach that may leave you unable to sleep.

Amala and Ewedu

Amala and Ewedu is a dish associated with the Yoruba of Southern Nigeria. And it could be found in most eateries. Amala is made of yam powder, which goes with an exquisite soup that is irresistible. But when it comes to late-night eating, you’re going to have to find a way to resist it. This is because it can truncate your sleep by making you urinate a lot.

The quarterly publication, for smart, stylish and successful African women delves into Aṣa’s life and work, discussing her five-year hiatus from the music scene, the cultural influences that have shaped both her and her craft, and the real change she wants to see in Nigeria.

See excerpts from her interview below;

On Music:

“Music is subjective, some will like what you do, and some won’t. One day, you’re in a 5-star hotel, the next, in a below 1-star hotel. Life is full of ups and downs, and that’s what makes it stimulating. I think the most important thing is never to lose sight of who you are and your purpose in life.”

On Her Personality:

“I don’t take myself too seriously. People think I’m a little uptight, but I like meeting and learning about people. Once we get past the introduction, I end up becoming the class clown!”

On Being a Woman:

“You are simply an angry feminist. No one looks at the fact that being a strong woman is the influence of good parenting and society.”

On Love & Dating:

“It’s either guys think they aren’t in your league or you have 150 sailors waiting at every port to swoon at your feet! Either way, it can be quite lonely and difficult to find someone who doesn’t mind taking the back seat to see you grow and wilfully take you for all you are.”

The magazine has this to say about Jackie:

“The 32-year-old social media star isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Her blunt beauty commentary, as well as her sense of humour and infectious personality, have earned her more 3 million subscribers on YouTube and 1.2 million followers on Instagram. Aina brings an unparalleled joy to a space that can sometimes devolve into pettiness and drama.”

Oprah Winfrey took it all back to where it all began as she posed for her first Oprah magazine cover with her best friend, Gayle King.

The billionaire media mogul said the reason her 40 years friendship with Gayle King has lasted without arguments or fallouts is because they’ve always been happy with their lives. According to Oprah, a true friend can’t be jealous of you or want to take advantage of you in any way.

She wrote as they covered Oprah Magazine September’s friendship issue;

I can’t tell you how many times people have introduced me to their best friends as, “She’s my Gayle.” The reason our friendship has worked for over 40 years, without arguments or fallouts, is that we’ve always been happy with our own lives. A true friend can’t be jealous of you, or want to take advantage of you in any way. Ever since we met in 1976, we’ve been doing the same thing. Listening. Talking. Laughing (a lot). Building dreams. Cheering. Being a shoulder to cry on. Speaking the truth. Being the truth. And now? Posing for our FIRST @oprahmagazine cover for September’s friendship issue.

Women with dark knuckles lack the confidence to wear fashion accessories due to public ridicule and stigmatization.

According to research, dryness can cause dark knuckles. Skin tends to become dry when your hands and feet are exposed to harsh chemicals or too much washing. This often leads to darkening of knuckles. Certain skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema tend to make your knuckles dark.

  • Lemon juice

Lemon contains nutrients as well as antioxidants that are essential for restoring your health and rejuvenating the entire physical system.

It also contains Vitamin C that plays a key role in rejuvenating the facial skin internally so that you do not ever develop age spots and can stay young forever.

Mix a spoon of lemon juice with sugar and rub your hands vigorously for about ten minutes. Do this every night before going to bed. The bleaching properties of lemon juice, together with the exfoliating properties of sugar would work wonders. Follow up with a hand cream.

  • The almond-curd treatment

Almonds are rich in protein, zinc, magnesium, Omega-3, calcium etc. They help nourishes and softens the skin when applied daily.

Mix crushed almonds with curd and apply the paste on your knuckles. Rub for 10 minutes. This practice, done every day, helps to reduce darkness and makes skin fairer.

  • Moisturize with milk cream

Darker skin tones and pigmentation can be solved by applying raw milk topically. The high lactic acid content not only has skin-lightening properties but will also help get rid of dead cells on the skin’s surface.

Mix the content of a vitamin E capsule with some milk cream. Apply on your dry knuckles and wait for sometime. Then, rub it for about 5 minutes and wash off. It softens dry skin. You may add a pinch of turmeric to benefit from the antiseptic and skin-lightening properties of turmeric.
