SPAIN APPOINTS A MINISTER OF SEX WHOSE PRIMARY DUTY IS TO HELP BATTLE THE DECLINE IN POPULATION

The Spanish Government has appointed a Minister of Sex in order to boost the nation’s declining population.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy confirmed Edelmira Barreira as the country’s top sex official.

With this move, the government hopes to boost Spain’s falling birth rate, which is one of the lowest in the developed world.

Spain in recent years has recorded declining birth rates which, according to reports, places it among developing countries with the lowest index.

Last year, for the first time, Spain’s deaths outnumbered its births. According to experts, they claim the reasons for the decline in births are: working long hours, eating late at night, and going to bed after midnight. In addition, youth unemployment rose to 48% in 2015, second only to Greece in Europe.

Spain’s education ministry said the declining birth-rate “aggravates other economic imbalances and generates important impacts in the Welfare State,” according to the Spanish newspaper ABC.

Barreira will be tasked with creating a national strategy to rectify the situation.

AMINA MOHAMMED SWORN IN AS FIFTH UN DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL

Amina Mohammed, Nigeria’s immediate past Minister of Environment, has been sworn in as the fifth Deputy Secretary-General of the UN at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, administered the oath of office on Mohammed.

Guterres said “I want to say that I am extremely, very, very proud that you accepted to join our team. Thank you very much.”

The Deputy UN chief, after her swearing in, immediately swung into action by declaring open the 2017 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Segment on Operational Activities for Development.

Her speech at the ECOSOC event was her first official engagement, followed by a brief press encounter with UN correspondents.

Mohammed, who was appointed by Guterres on December 15, 2016 as his deputy, was supposed to have assumed office on January 1, 2017.

She, however, delayed the assumption of her new role at the request of President Muhammadu Buhari to complete some ongoing responsibilities she was handling at that time.

The office of the UN Deputy Secretary-General was formally established by the General Assembly in 1997 to handle administrative responsibilities of the Secretary-General.

As the fifth Deputy Secretary-General, Mohammed will help to manage the UN Secretariat operations and ensure inter-sectoral and inter-institutional coherence of activities and programmes.

She will also support the Secretary-General in elevating the profile and leadership of the UN in the economic and social spheres, including further efforts to strengthen the UN as leading centre for development policy and development assistance.

In accepting the appointment, Mohammed said she was humbled at the opportunity to serve humanity.

She said “the opportunity and responsibility to serve people and the planet as UN Deputy Secretary-General is truly humbling.

“I am most grateful for the confidence and trust demonstrated by the UN Secretary-General-designate António Guterres and President Muhammadu Buhari. The next phase of my continued service to the people of Nigeria at the global level will certainly build on the rich insights and lessons drawn from engaging with leaders, colleagues and stakeholders across our beloved nation”.

She recalled her positions of responsibilities over the last three decades and her contributions to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and recently working for environment protection as part of Buhari administration’s vision to transform Nigeria.

Mohammed served as UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Post-2015 Development Planning.

She was instrumental in bringing about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the SDGs.

Before joining the UN, Mohammed worked for three successive administrations in Nigeria, serving as Special Adviser on MDGs.

She provided advice on issues including poverty, public sector reform and sustainable development, and coordinating poverty reduction interventions.

Born in 1961 and educated in Nigeria and the UK, Mohammed is married with six children.

Helen Oyeyemi has won the PEN America OPEN BOOK Award 2017.

The PEN Open Book Award was created by PEN American Center’s Open Book Committee, a group committed to racial and ethnic diversity within the literary and publishing communities.

Helen won the cash prize of $5,000 for the category of the “Exceptional Book-Length Work of Literature By An Author of Color Published In 2016” for her collection of short stories “What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours”.

In 2010, she received the Somerset Maughan Award, and was named as one of Granta’s ‘Best of Young British Novelists’ in 2013.

UCHE OFODILE APPOINTED AFRICA REGIONAL HEAD FOR FACEBOOK’S EXPRESS WIFI

The former Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone, Ghana Uche Ofodile, has been appointed by Facebook as its Regional Head, Africa for Express WiFi.

Facebook’s Express WiFi is an initiative that gives mobile device owners in underserved communities access to fast and affordable internet services through partnerships with local internet service providers.

Prior to taking over this position, Uche who has over 20 years of experience was the CEO of Tigo DRC. She has also worked with the Econet Wireless (now Airtel), Nutricima, a joint venture between PZ Cussons, PLC (UK) and Glanbia (Ireland).

Her key role at her new position will be to help expand connectivity to underserved locations in Africa through Wi-Fi.

In a post on her Instagram page announcing her new position, Uche Ofodile who will be based in London, stated that Express Wi-Fi will also work to empower entrepreneurs.

“Today, I’m happy to announce that I am joining Facebook as the Regional Head, Africa for Express Wi-Fi. As a key component of internet.org‘s mission to connect the two-thirds of the world that are not already connected, the goal of Express Wi-Fi is to help expand connectivity to underserved locations around the world through Wi-Fi. Not only do we aim to increase the number of internet users; we also help create and empower local entrepreneurs! I am so proud of the work the team has done so far and we will continue to build on this in Africa. I am super excited to be joining the team.”

She holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science, attended the Columbia Business School- Columbia University, and studied Strategic Management under their Executive Education program.
