2019 ELECTION: 7 WOMEN AMONG 45 CANDIDATES CONTESTING FOR LAGOS GOVERNORSHIP SEAT

This is according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) final list of governorship candidates displayed on Thursday at its headquarters, Yaba.

The females eying the state governorship seat include Asisat Abdulraheem of the African Peoples Alliance (APA); Patience Omeebere of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Abiola Adeyemi of the Democratic Peoples Congress (DPC).

Others are Pauline Adegbe of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA); Omolara Adesanya of the Providence Peoples Congress (PPC); Oluwatoyin Ogunbambi of the Peoples Trust (PT) and Adebisi Ogunsanya of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

They will slug it out with Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Mr Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), among others in the March 2 poll.

The list showed that DPC has both its governorship and deputy governorship candidates as females while the other six female candidates have male deputies.

Also, 22 male governorship candidates have female deputies while the other 16 male candidates have male deputies.

HOUSE OF REPS APPROVES N30,000 MINIMUM WAGE

The green chamber approved the minimum wage bill following its adoption by the ad hoc committee on the report presented to the assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

After approving the new minimum wage, House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, said the bill was passed so as to increase the welfare of workers.

He said,

“Today, we passed the new national minimum wage Bill 2019 in keeping with our commitment to improve the welfare of the Nigerian workers.

“The Bill was given speedy and accelerated passage in just two legislative days as a House of the Nigerian people.”

In the face of the recent development, the bill would be sent to the Senate for concurrence.

President Buhari had in the executive bill sought the approval of N27,000 as against the N30,000 agreed by the lawmakers.

YEMI ALADE BECOMES THE 2ND NIGERIAN ARTISTE TO HIT THE 100M VIEWS ON YOUTUBE

Late in December 2018, Davido became the first Nigerian artiste to hit the 100M view mark on video streaming site, YouTube, with his video for ‘Fall.’

Few months later, the video that for long was the most viewed African video, Yemi Alade‘s ‘Johnny’ has followed suit, achieving the landmark number of views on the site.

Yemi Alade shared her excitement at this feat on her Instagram page in a post on Sunday, January 27, 2019, where she thanked her fans for their support.

”THANK YOU – THANK YOU – THANK YOU. 100MILLIONVIEWS”, she captioned.

The singer also promised her fans that she will be ”putting in more work this year” as she was encouraged by the support.

21-YEAR-OLD NAOMI OSAKA BECOMES WORLD’S NUMBER 1 FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER

Naomi Osaka has won the Australian Open and is the new world number one, after beating Czech Petra Kvitova 7-6 (2) 5-7 6-4 in a dramatic final.

In September 2018, Osaka was reduced to tears when the crowd booed her after a controversial US Open final in which Serena Williams lost her cool. The hard-fought victory made Osaka the first Asian, male or female, to hold the world’s top ranking, taking over from Romania’s Simona Halep.

The Japanese youngster fell to one knee in celebration, head bowed, as Melbourne Park erupted in thunderous cheers. “I felt like I was in a state of shock through the entire trophy presentation,” the 21-year-old said.

She is the first woman to follow her first grand slam title by immediately winning the next one since Jennifer Capriati in 2001 and the first since Serena in 2015 to win two slams in a row.

NOLLYWOOD ACTRESS, KATE HENSHAW NAMED JUDGE ON CBS TALENT SHOW

Kate Henshaw has been selected to be among the 50 judges for “The World’s Best”, a talent show put together by CBS Global.

Kate shared this laudable achievement via her Instagram page earlier today, January 25.

An excited Henshaw told her fans that she’s ‘totally excited to finally announce that she is one of the International judges, proudly representing Nigeria in the New CBS Global talent show.’

The reality TV series, touted as the biggest talent show in the world, will be hosted by Emmy Award winner James Corden.  The show premieres in the US on February 3, right after the Super Bowl.

Henshaw alongside 49 other international entertainers from various countries will make up a cross-section of judges called ‘Wall of the World’.

Speaking on what to expect from the show, Alison Holloway, executive producer, and showrunner, said:

“From Nigeria to Japan, from Switzerland to Samoa, our 50 world experts bring a true global presence to our stage.

“Among them are champions, award-winners, international TV judges and even superstars in their native lands. They are knowledgeable, honest and, at times, outrageous. They bring an entirely fresh perspective to the talent show landscape.”

The series is a one-of-a-kind talent competition featuring elite acts from around the globe competing for a $1 million prize. The acts not only have to impress the all-star line-up of American judges also need to break through the “wall of the world,” featuring more than 50 renowned experts from 38 different countries.

OVER 20,000 NIGERIAN GIRLS TRAFFICKED TO MALI ARE BEEN KEPT IN THICK FORESTS

Nigeria’s anti-trafficking agency said it has found thousands of missing girls and women in southern Mali, many of whom were sold as sex slaves.

According to the agency, NAPTIP, there are between 20,000 and 45,000 kidnapped Nigerian women in Mali it intends to return to Nigeria.

General Julie Okah-Donli, NAPTIP Director, said the women mostly came from rural areas of six different states in Nigeria.

“They were tricked into going to Mali by giving them the impression they were going to get jobs in hotels, for example,” Okah-Donli told Al Jazeera.

“Some were actually abducted while going to school.

“There are over one million Nigerian residents in Mali, out of which about 20,000 are trapped into forced prostitution. The conditions are horrible. They are kept in the thick of the forest where they cannot escape and with the ‘madames’ watching over them.”

According to a 2018 report by the US State Department, human trafficking is a major problem in Africa’s most populous country.

Nigerian victims of human trafficking were found in about 40 different countries, the report stated, adding that “80 percent of all female Nigerian migrants in Italy are or will become sex workers.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, OBY EZEKWESILI STEPS DOWN FROM PRESIDENTIAL RACE

The Presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) and former Minister of Education Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili has announced that she’s stepping down from the race.

She made this known in a series of tweets on Thursday morning. She wrote:

Following the reactions of Nigerian citizens at home and abroad to the 2019 Presidential Debate held on Saturday 19 January 2019, and after extensive consultations with leaders from various walks of life across the country over the past few days…

I have decided to step down from the presidential race and focus on helping to build a Coalition for a viable alternative to the #APCPDP in the 2019 general elections.

This coalition for a viable alternative has now more than ever before become an urgent mission for and on behalf of the citizenry.

Over the past three months, I have been in private extended talks with other candidates to make a coalition possible that would allow Nigerians to exercise choice without feeling helplessly saddled with the #APCPDP.

In doing so, I have not hesitated to offer my willingness to step down my candidacy in order to facilitate the emergence of a strong and viable alternative behind which Nigerians can line up in our collective search for a new beginning.

My commitment in this regard has been consistent and in consonance with my agreement, at the request of then aspirants under PACT in 2018, to supervise their internal selection process as an outside observer passionate about building this alternative force.

Despite disagreements within the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria on these and other issues, I have decided that it is now necessary to show by action and example my determination on this issue by stepping down my candidacy and focusing on building the coalition once and for all.
