Claudia Lopez, a symbol of the fight against corruption in Colombia, on Sunday became the first woman to be elected mayor of the capital Bogota.

The 49-year-old center-left candidate, who is openly gay, won the local election with 35.2 percent of the vote ahead of liberal Carlos Fernando Galan (32.5 percent) with almost all votes counted.

“Not only did we win but we’re changing history,” ex-senator Lopez said on Twitter.

President Ivan Duque said the local elections around the country had attracted the “largest number of candidates in history.”

Lopez’s victory in the capital city of 7.2 million people is a significant step forward in a country used to being led by male liberal elites.

“Being a woman is not a fault, being a headstrong woman, firm … is not a fault. Being gay is not a fault, being a girl from a modest family is not a fault,” Lopez told AFP last week.

More than 36 million voters were called to vote for mayors, governors and local assemblies, with more than 116,000 candidates to choose from, 37 percent of whom were women.

The elections were beset by violence in more than a quarter of municipalities, the electoral mission observatory said.

Former left-wing guerrillas FARC, who became a political party in the historic 2016 peace accord that ended a half century of armed rebellion, took part in elections for the second time.

A new law that went into effect in Kenya this week makes it legal for a man to marry as many women as he wants. And a leading women’s group is applauding it.

President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the polygamy measure into law Tuesday, formally recognizing what has long been a cultural practice in the nation.

Parliament passed the bill in March despite protests from female lawmakers who angrily stormed out of the late-night session at the time.

The bill initially allowed the first wife the right to veto the husband’s choice of additional spouses. Male members of parliament successfully pushed to get that clause dropped.

“Marriage is the voluntary union of a man and a woman whether in a monogamous or polygamous union,” Kenyatta said in a statement. “The Marriage Act 2014 defines various types of marriages including monogamous, polygamous, customary, Christian, Islamic and Hindu marriages.”

No limit on number of wives

The law legalizes polygamous unions, but does not provide an official limit on the number of wives a man can have.

The Federation of Women Lawyers, a powerful women’s rights group, applauded aspects of the bill and criticized others.

Polygamy already is a common fixture among many cultures in Kenya and in some other African countries.

The bill, the group said, is long overdue because polygamous unions were previously not regarded as equal to regular marriages.

“We are happy with the law because finally all marriages are being treated equally,” said Christine Ochieng, executive director of the nation’s Federation of Women Lawyers.

“All marriages will be issued with marriage certificates, including customary marriages. Before this, customary marriages were treated as inferior with no marriage certificates. This opened up suffering for the women because they could not legally prove they were married to a particular man. ”

First wife has no say

However, she said, the first wife should have a say in picking her husband’s co-wives.

“What we are not happy about is that now a man can marry another wife or wives without the consent of the first wife,” she said. “That section of the law is potentially open to abuse because a man can secretly marry other wives because he doesn’t need his wife’s consent to marry.”

But Jane Kimani, a Nairobi resident, said the bill is archaic and has no place in modern society.

“Polygamous marriages should not even be an issue today,” she said. “Kenya is moving backward instead of changing with the times.”

This defendant is conscienceless, wicked, an animal, and not fit to walk on the streets. I hereby sentence Adegboyega Adenekan to 60 years’ imprisonment. This is the sentence of the court.
Schools should not cover up teachers who sexually abuse children. Parents should not be carried away by  aesthetics of schools. This case may just be the tip of the iceberg as a lot of our children are suffering in silence.
Parents should be bold enough to confront teachers and school management because a lot of our children are suffering in silence.
I advise or recommend that the education and social welfare ministry workers should visit schools randomly to give them a check.

A one man protest from an ex-female student has led to the suspension of a Nigerian university lecturer in Kaduna who assaulted her.

The Kaduna State University on Wednesday suspended one of its academic staff, Mr Bala Umar, popularly known as A.B. Umar, for allegedly soliciting sex for grades.

A committee was set up to investigate the allegations against Umar, following a one-man protest at KASU by a female graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The lady, whose name was not given, alleged that Umar, who was sacked by ABU for sexual misconduct and later employed by KASU, was not fit to be a lecturer in any institution.

KASU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Abdullahi Ashafa, who chaired the meeting, said KASU had zero tolerance for such misconduct by its members of staff and would deal appropriately with anyone found wanting.

Ashafa said the university was, therefore, proceeding with investigations into the allegations levelled against Umar.

“Sometimes in the first week of October, a lady who was an ex-student of ABU tweeted that a former staff of the institution who is employed by KASU, had sexually harassed her when he was a staff at ABU.

“She mentioned his name and the vice-chancellor of KASU quickly formed a committee to investigate the issue, not only to clear its name, but to reassure parents and students who are studying here or intend to study of their safety.

“KASU is building a reputable name as a centre of excellence, so such allegations need to be investigated and cleared.

“The incident did not occur in KASU, but the way the issue is being portrayed is like we are providing a safe haven for those whose appointments had been terminated elsewhere.

“Umar was appointed in error; there was no much investigation to ascertain what made him leave ABU at the age of 54.”

Here is what the protester wrote on Twitter

Nine women were among the 16 names nominated as commissioners by Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara.

Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, said in Ilorin on Tuesday that their names had been forwarded to the State House of Assembly for clearance.

Ajakaye said with the nine women on the list, the female gender would represent 56. 25 per cent, while men would be 43. 75 per cent of the coming cabinet.

With the inclusion of five women on the list of the fresh nominees sent to the Assembly, Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has now gone down in history as Nigeria’s most gender-friendly governor,” Ajakaye said.

According to him, the inclusion of nine women in his cabinet was in fulfillment of the promise he made to compensate them for not having representatives in the House of Assembly and National Assembly.

Ajakaye said each of the 16 local government areas had a commissioner nominee.

He said that they were made up of top bureaucrats, entrepreneurs, educationists, professionals and grassroots politicians.

The women nominees include Saadatu Modibbo Kawu (Ilorin South); Joana Kolo (Edu); Arinola Fatima Lawal (Ilorin East); Aishat Ahman Patigi (Patigi) and Afolabi Adenike Khairat (Ifelodun).

Rapper, Nicki Minaj and boyfriend Kenneth Petty appear to have officially tied the knot—and just in the nick of time! After obtaining a marriage license at a Beverly Hills Courthouse in late July, the couple had just 90 days to say “I do.”

But on Monday night, Minaj announced the exciting news on Instagram with a video that showcased matching “Mr. and Mrs.” mugs and black and white baseball caps that had “Bride” and “Groom” written across the front. “Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty 10•21•19,” she captionedthe post with a bride and groom emoji.

Minaj has sparked marriage rumors left and right throughout their relationship, which they made Instagram official in December 2018. Indeed, she lovingly called the 41-year-old her husband in March, changed her Twitter name to Mrs. Petty in August and tweeted about feeling “unconditionally loved” in September.

And just days after those tweets, things got even more serious when Minaj announced her retirement from music, saying she was ready for the next phase of her life: motherhood.

“I’ve decided to retire and have my family,” she tweeted in September. “I know you guys are happy now.”

“To my fans, keep reppin me,” she continued. “Do it til da death of me, in the box—cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE.”

Rather than keep their relationship under wraps, Minaj frequently makes her love for Petty clear. She has referred to him as the Ken to her Barbie, and, back in December, she wrote in another Instagram post, “He want me to be his wife- his MISSIS like SIPPI NOW.”

After two years of living together with a man as wife, popular Yoruba actress, Bose Oladimeji, says she’s had just about enough and walking out fast. Her reason is none other than domestic abuse, which she says has become not only brutally violent but life-threatening as well.

“Yes I’m ready to go, in fact, I’m not with him right now. I just have to run for my life, my life is very precious to me. I can’t just allow someone to kill me like that and I want to address some ladies out there that they should not love a guy because of what he gives them. They should be sure the love is genuine and not be fooled by money and comfort. I’m leaving right now, I need to run away for my life. I need to save myself. My life will be in danger if I continue to stay with him, so I’m leaving right now,” she said in a chat with Potpourri.

Highlighting the gory details of the abuse, Bose Oladimeji said the beatings start whenever he comes home drunk

“Whenever he’s drunk he’s out of his senses and starts misbehaving, beating me. He acts very crazy. Any weapon he sees around he uses it on me but when he is sober he starts to regret whatever he has done. What I’m saying is that in the process of beating me what if I collapse and die or get injured, what will people say?” she said with agony in her eyes.

When asked if she didn’t see it coming, Bose Oladimeji said he pretended and hid his true nature at the beginning of their relationship, explaining how they met and how all the abuse began.

“We meet in the club through a friend and he was well presented and loving, humble and respectful and he spent a lot of money that night but after everything, to be honest, we went home separately. The following day we hooked up and that was how it all started. He was taking good care of me and that was one of the reasons I fell in love with him. But what I found odd about him is the forceful way he has sex with. No foreplay, nothing, just to jump on me and forces his way through. No affection, no cuddling, no romance just brutal sex. I was raped like this most nights, and usually followed by beating and insults,” she added

Though not legally married, they lived together for two years with issues between them. But Bose Oladimeji would not want to drag the children into it.
