NINE-YEAR-OLD EMMANUELLA OZIOFU DEVELOPS APP AND WEBSITE TO EMPOWER NIGERIAN CHILDREN

Nine-year-old Emmanuella Oziofu has successfully developed an app and website to empower Nigerian children. Her website, www.emmas academy.com, aims to empower young Nigerians with skills in area of coding, web development and graphic design. Her mobile app, Emma’s ICT Academy which is available on google playstore, is aimed at encouraging both fellow kids and even parents to imbibe a culture of eating healthy local and international dishes.

Emmanuella who is a fifth Grade student of Skycrest Schools enrolled at Mikon Institute of Information Technology, where she bagged a Certificate in Basic Training – Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and later, a Diploma in Desktop Publishing in 2016. She also has certificate in Web Design from Complete Computer Technology Institute (CCT), in 2017,

Her journey into Information Communication Technology started when she was just seven years old, and at nine, she already has a diploma in Desktop Publishing, Advance Excel, Adobe Page Maker, Advance Power Point and Corel Draw. In 2018, despite her routine class work she also enrolled to study Web Development and Graphic Design at NIIT.

Emmanuella went ahead to enrol for Mobile App development at Tech24 and developed her personal mobile app, as well as  designed and hosted her own website, known as Emma’s ICT Academy. She claims to have mastered operations in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, WordPress, PHP, Mysql and Graphic Design after successfully completing online courses at SOLOLEARN, California and acquired Certificates in HTML Fundamentals Course; Certificate in PHP Tutorial Course; Certificate in CSS Fundamentals Course; Certificate in SQL Fundamentals Course; Certificate in JavaScript Tutorial Course and Certificate in JQuery Tutorial Course.

Emmanuella reveals that she would like to help teach young children about ICT and also broaden her knowledge about the field in future. Speaking with Hi-Tech at the unveiling of her mobile app and website, she said that her passion to impact lives meaningfully informed her decision to acquire knowledge in ICT.

She said:

“My target was to become a professional web designer and analyst at age nine, and I have accomplished it. I have developed over 12 websites, static and dynamic for my school. I also want to project my skills, among which is a web agency (www.emmas academy. com) to teach people how to build a website. “Another is to teach young ones how to prepare healthy Nigerian food.”

She had previously created a chat site, a personal website and had at the age of eight, created three websites for her former school, Fortune Schools in Benin, Edo.

Renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is among the recipients of this year’s Duke University honorary degree.
Back in March, President Vincent E. Price of Duke University confirmed that the Americanah author is on the list of receipients.

AGELESS BEAUTY ANGELA BASSETT COVERS NEW EDITION OF PORTER EDIT MAGAZINE

Angela Bassett, 59, stunningly covers the latest edition of women fashion magazine, Porter Edit where she opens up about her family, beauty secrets, role in Black Panther and upcoming movie, Mission Impossible.

On how she keeps her 21 year old marriage to Emmy winning actor Courtney B. Vance going, the Black Panther star shared:
Well, he always said divorce is not an option. I’ve always told him: ‘Do what you want to do’ – meaning pursue his dreams – ‘because I don’t want you to get to the end and blame anything on me.’

Angela is unarguably one of Hollywood’s most sort after actors, however, she admits that being a part of Black Panther increased her reach as she now has fans cutting across the age range of 6- 86, according to Porter Edit.
“Black Panther has definitely brought me a broader audience,” Bassett said, adding: “The audience for it has been from six years old to 86.

Every now and again, something comes along that moves movie culture forward, and Black Panther definitely sits on that throne. To have a black male superhero, but also to have strong, complicated, vivid, black female characters was special. Usually we are just the mothers of, the lovers of… Culturally, socially, it just resonates on so many different levels, and I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

On how she raises her 12 year old twins, Slater and Bronwyn, Bassett reveals that they don’t own cellphones or iPads as she denies them some things just to remind them that she did not get everything she wanted while growing up.

They don’t have cell phones or iPads. I had a pencil and paper, they can have pencil and paper. I can’t give them everything – I don’t give myself everything.

On how she remains ageless, Bassett shares that she is not big on exercise but 85 percent of her toned body and ever young features is due to proper diet.

MARY AKPOBOME, COMEDIAN ALIBABA’S WIFE, LAUNCHES PURPLE GIRL FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION

The Purple Girl Foundation has been established to help young girls who lack the means to further their education by reason of their family background, location, or social status.

According to the board of trustees, the launch of the Purple Girl Foundation is intended to bring together key stakeholders in the education and social development space from both the private and public sector to provide more insight around the issues around girl-child education in Nigeria. One of the major goals of the foundation is to proffer conceivable resolutions to these issues that will significantly assuage the plight of indigent young girls in Nigeria who face obvious challenges in pursuing their education.

The theme for the event was “Girl-Child Education for Nation Building” and it gathered together industry experts and professionals in various aspects of social development and education. Mrs. Toyin Saraki, Founder and President of Wellbeing Foundation Africa delivered the keynote address and Mary Akpobome addressed guests on major reasons why the foundation has come alive.

The panel discussion session involved Professor Yomi Fawehinmi, Advisor, Horizons & Pathways, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Dr. Abosede Lewu, Founder, Girlsaide Initiative; Mr. Mohammed Ahmed,Director, Schools, Education & Society, British Council; and Mrs. Chinedum Oluwadamilola, Head of School, Corona Secondary School.

Other guests in attendance include ace comedian Alibaba, DayStar Pastor Sam Adeyemi, Nike Adeyemi, representative of the Lagos state deputy governor, former deputy governor of Lagos, Mrs SarahSosan, retired AIG of police Tunji Alapini, Richard Mofe Damijo, amongst others.

DESTINY’S CHILD SINGER, MICHELLE WILLIAMS WILLINGLY CHECKS INTO A MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY

US celebrity gossip website TMZ has reported that Destiny’s Child singer,  Michelle Williams, has checked into a mental health facility in California.

Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams says she has “sought help” for the good of her mental health.

The 37-year-old has previously spoken about being depressed and “suicidal”.

In an Instagram post, Michelle said that as a mental health awareness advocate, she “listened to the same advice” she’s given to others.

She’s had messages of support from artists including original Destiny’s Child member LaTavia Roberson and Missy Elliott.

“For years, I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time suffering with depression, Michelle Williams said in an interview on US TV in October 2017.

“It got really, really bad, to the point of being suicidal.”

She added:

“I was at that place where it got so dark and heavy because sometimes you feel like ‘I’m the provider, I take care of people, I’m not supposed to be feeling this way – what do I do?’

“I wanted out.”

Missy Elliott responded to the news on Twitter, saying:

“I want to lift our sis up in prayer because there are so many people battling this and many trying to deal with it alone”.

She added:

“Let’s keep the ones who are openly dealing with it uplifted and be encouraging to them”.

GREENHOUSE CAPITAL OPENS APPLICATION FOR FEMALE TECH PROGRAMME

GreenHouse Capital opens application for female tech programme

The Venture Garden Group, GreenHouse Capital, has opened 2018 application for the first-female-focused tech accelerator program in Nigeria. The three-month accelerator programme begins mid-August and will run through mid-November.
According to the Director of GreenHouse Lab, Tosin Durotoye: “To tap into the vast brainpower and opportunity for innovation necessary to propel Nigeria and Africa as a whole forward, our mission at GreenHouse Lab is to level the playing field by providing early‑stage, women-led, high‑ growth technology start‑ups with investments and support infrastructure within the range of 250, 000 USD.
“We also provide exceptional teams with the resources and mentorship network they need to drive growth and scale their companies both in emerging and international markets.”
Durotoye noted that the program is residential and will be hosted at Vibranium Valley tech campus in Lagos. The accelerator ends with a demo day where companies get to pitch their businesses to a wider network of local and international investors.
In a research conducted by Disrupt Africa, $195.1 million in venture capital funding was invested in African start‑ups compared to $129.1million in 2016, an increase of 51 per cent. With $63.3 million in startup investments in 2017, Nigeria was the top investment destination in Africa followed by South Africa and Kenya. As Nigeria continues to emerge as a technology hub, one thing is clear, women are missing on the playing field.
The research further revealed that of the 25 per cent of women in tech, only 21 per cent are tech executives and of these, only 11 per cent are African technology officers. Currently, more than half of global executives report a shortfall of tech workers, which slows or prevents businesses from growing.
“In addition to being under-represented in the tech space, women are also severely under-funded. In 2017, women-led start-ups received just 2.2 per cent of all available venture capital dollars although women-led startups have been found to produce over 30 per cent higher return on equity.”
The first-of-its-kind in Nigeria, GreenHouse Lab is a three-month accelerator focused solely on early stage, women-led technology start-ups in sub‑Saharan Africa, as well as African-run startups domiciled in the US or UK with products that are scalable in African markets. GreenHouse Capital will also invest a minimum of 100, 000 USD in companies that qualify and reach specific milestones at the end of the program.
