PROFILE| MEET TEMIE GIWA-TUBOSUN, FOUNDER OF LIFEBANK

Temie Giwa-Tubosun (born Oluwaloni Olamide Giwa, 4 December 1985) is a Nigerian-American Health Manager, Founder of LifeBank (formerly One Percent Project), a business enterprise in Nigeria working to improve access to blood transfusions in the country.

Temie was born in Ila Orangun, Osun State, Nigeria to a university professor and school teacher. She is the fourth of six children. Her name “Temie” came from the abridging of “Temitope”, one of her birth names.

She grew up in Ila, Ilesha, and in Ibadan until she was fifteen. When she was ten, her parents won the US Diversity Immigrant Visa and left for the United States with the three older siblings. In 2001, at fifteen, she left to join them with her two younger siblings.

Temie attended Osseo Senior High School, Minnesota, and graduated in 2003. She then attended the Minnesota State University Moorhead and graduated in 2007. In 2008, she went to graduate school at Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey from where she graduated in July 2010.

In January 2010, she went for a graduate fellowship at the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland, which lasted till July of that year when she graduated Middlebury Institute of International Studies Monterey.

She worked briefly at Fairview Health Services in Minnesota in 2010.

In January 2016, Temie founded LifeBank, a business organisation set up to tackle the problem of blood shortage in Nigeria. The founding was inspired by the birth of her first child and the complications from that experience. The technology and logistics company is based in Lagos, and incubated at Co-Creation Hub in Yaba. As at January 2017, the company has helped deliver over 2000 pints of blood to patients across the state.

On August 31, 2016, she met with Mark Zuckerberg during his first visit to Nigeria. She was one of the two women Zuckerberg referenced in his town hall meeting the next day. Of her work, Zuckerberg had said,

“If everyone had the opportunity to build something like this, then the world would be a better place… I’ve been to a lot of different cities… people around the world are trying to build stuff like that. If she actually pulls it off, then she’d show a model that will impact not just Lagos, not just Nigeria, but countries all around the world.”

Of the meeting, Temie said to Quartz, “Mark’s visit is validation for years of work and everything we’re trying to do.”

#PROFILE| CELEBRATING THE WOMAN WHO HAS PUT A NEW SPIN TO HOSTING AND PRESENTING,BOLANLE OLUKANNI

Bolanle was brought up in Nigeria, Israel and Kenya. Olukanni went to St. Guardian angels Primary school in Lagos and went ahead to Queens College . She moved to Nairobi, went to Rosslyn Academy in Nairobi, Kenya for some portion of her secondary school. Preceding her last year of secondary school, she moved to America for her senior year and went to Wichita Southeast High School in Wichita, Kansas, where she partook in the National Speech and Debate Tournament for Dramatic Interpretation .
In 2011, she got a Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, Chicago, with a twofold degree – Bachelors of Arts in both Communications and International Studies. In May 2010, while still in school, she won the Loyola University Chicago Kale Williams Award for Exceptional Work in Promoting Human Rights and Social Justice.
Bolanle co-hosts Nigeria’s number one singing competition, MTN Project Fame with Joseph Benjamin and is also a co-host on Moments with Mo. She is a co-founder of ‘Girls For The Future’, an empowerment training workshop which focuses on giving aid to Nigerian girls through education.

#PROFILE: CELEBRATING MUSIC STAR NIYOLA

Eniola Akinbo, known by her stage name Niyola, was born on December 9, 1985 in Lagos state, Nigeria. The female Nigerian recording artist, singer, songwriter and performer developed interests in music at a very early age and sand in church with her siblings.
Her interest in music piqued and she ventured into music in 2000 and she was the runner up in Amen Starlet Competition,2000. 2005 brought a new turn as she decided to go professional with her music. Her breakthrough came with her single ‘toh bad’ which was released in 2013 under EME label.
She has since won awards as the female artist of the year by Nigeria Entertainment Award in 2014 and 2014 Headies award as Best Vocal Performance. With a voice that is so rich and unique, and an impeccable sense of fashion, Niyola is a force to reckon with in the Nigerian Entertainment industry.

#PROFILE| MEET MAKY BENSON, THE ECONOMIST TURNED PARENTING BLOGGER

Maky Benson was born Chiamaka Araraume into the household of Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume of Imo state, Eastern Nigeria. She is a graduate of Energy Economics and a chemical engineer.

She is happily married to Yomi Benson and the duo is blessed with two children, Micah and Eliana. Recently, the economist turned lifestyle and parenting blogger (www.makyscorner.com) published her cook book titled ‘ Micah’s meals’. Micah’s meals is a book which contains several recipes for babies, toddlers and beyond. Her book was inspired by her decision to feed her first child, Micah home-made and healthy food.

Maky (@makybenson on IG) is also the host and co-founder of The Little Foodie Sessions, a series of cooking sessions where you learn everything you want to know and more about how, when and what to feed your little ones.
